Gayle hammers 98 to thwart Indians

Twenty20

West Indies captain Chris Gayle kept his side's hopes of reaching the ICC World Twenty20 semi-finals alive as he blasted 98 in a 14-run win over India at Kensington Oval.

In a game both sides needed to win to retain any real hope of reaching the last-four, Gayle was at his swashbuckling best, smashing seven sixes and five fours as the West Indies reached 169-6. India never threatened the target and the steady flow of wickets meant they finished on 155-9.

Australia hammered Sri Lanka by 81 runs after dismissing their opponents for a meagre 87. The result, and the resulting change in net run-rate, all but assures Australia of a semi-final berth.
