Gorrod shines but Saltaire hit back

Bradford League

Teenage opener Andy Gorrod made his maiden Bradford League century just a day after celebrating his 17th birthday.

But there was no happy ending for the talented opener because his club, Gomersal, suffered a four-wicket defeat to Saltaire.

Gorrod made 103 and dominated his side's innings of 231-9, but Saltaire made light of the target as Waleed Akhtar (51), Tinishe Gormwe (45) and Yassir Abbas (43) attacked the bowling.

Century-making opener Mark Gill, of Pudsey Congs, hit seven sixes and six fours and shared a second-wicket stand of 172 with Yorkshire all-rounder Richard Pyrah, who made 91 out of 275-3.

Cleckheaton made 203-5 in reply. The highlight was an unbeaten 71 from teenage all-rounder Edward Walmsley on his return after a season at Bankfoot.

Champions Baildon got their defence off to a winning start with a 39-run victory at promoted Undercliffe. Jonny Reynolds (69), Ian Phillkirk (43) and new overseas player Shane Gadson (41) helped them to 264-6 and left-arm spinner Mushtaq Ahmed took 4-45 as Undercliffe were restricted to 225-9.

Pudsey St Lawrence captain James Smith led from the front as his side defeated last season's runners-up Bradford & Bingley by six-wickets. Smith (78) and Gareth Clough (58) enabled Saints to power past 224-9, which was built around 89 from opener Simon Davies.

Runs were in short supply at Yeadon. The home side was dismissed for 88 by East Bierley who then struggled to win by one wicket. Left-arm spinners were to the fore with Andrew Robertson taking 5-39 and Luke Jarvis (4-16) for East Bierley.

Opener Sam Frankland and Scott Richardson starred in Woodlands' four-wicket win over new-boys Bankfoot.

Frankland was the surprise package with the ball taking 5-32 with his gentle medium pace as Bankfoot were dismissed for 129.

Richardson was the one batsman to look at ease, making 79 not out as Woodlands weathered some good bowling from Greg Colehan (5-32).

Former Yorkshire leg-spinner Mark Lawson took 6-27 as Hanging Heaton – relegated last season – beat Lightcliffe by 93 runs

The highest individual score was the 119 made by Keighley's Richard Robinson in their 105-run win over Hartshead Moor.
