Harmison out of Tykes’ Northants clash

STEVE HARMISON looks to have played his last game for Yorkshire.

The former England pace bowler has been ruled out of tomorrow’s County Championship match against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road with an injury to his left side.

Harmison - nearing the end of a one-month loan spell from Durham - suffered the injury during the latter throes of yesterday’s Championship fixture against Leicestershire at Grace Road.

He left the Yorkshire squad in Northampton this morning to return to Durham to undergo a scan.

Yorkshire had talked about the possibility of extending the loan, which expires before the visit of Second Division leaders Derbyshire to Headingley Carnegie on August 15.

But with Ryan Sidebottom on course to return from a calf injury in time for that match, it seems unlikely Harmison will come back to Yorkshire.

The 33-year-old had struggled markedly since signing for the county, serving up a remarkably mixed bag of material.

In three Championship appearances, Harmison took eight wickets at 24.47, but those figures told only half the story.

In his 42 overs, Harmison also sent down 18 wides and 11 no balls, along with a succession of wayward deliveries.

He was even jeered by a section of the Grace Road crowd after a shaky start to the recent match.

Harmison’s place at Wantage Road is likely to be taken by all-rounder Rich Pyrah, while Yorkshire have chosen not to add to the 13-man squad on duty at Grace Road.

Adil Rashid was the other non-playing member, but he could replace Anthony McGrath if the pitch takes turn.

Yorkshire squad versus Northamptonshire: Lyth, Root, Jaques, Gale (captain), Bairstow, Ballance, McGrath, Pyrah, Rafiq, Patterson, Ashraf, Rashid.
