Headingley latest: Sayers leads way for Yorkshire

YORKSHIRE go into the final day of their County Championship match against Essex at Headingley Carnegie with a lead of 191.

The home team ended day three on 144-2 in their second innings, with Joe Sayers unbeaten on 45 and Andrew Gale undefeated on six.

Joe Root was the first man out, caught down the leg-side by wicketkeeper James Foster off the bowling of Greg Smith for 67.

It was a fine innings by the 21-year-old, who drove particularly well during a 97-ball knock that included 10 fours, his opening stand with Sayers worth 106.

Next to fall was Phil Jaques, who scored 126 in the first innings but managed only 18 second time around before he was lbw to the off-spinner Tom Westley.

Although Yorkshire are handily placed to push for victory, they will have one eye on the weather, with rain forecast for much of the day.
