Headingley put faith in Moxon to deliver success

YORKSHIRE have given Martyn Moxon a resounding vote of confidence ahead of the new season and backed him to bring success to the club.

The county say they have "great faith" in Moxon and insist his job as director of professional cricket is secure.

Since Moxon returned in 2007, Yorkshire have achieved County Championship finishes of sixth, seventh and seventh and not progressed beyond the quarter-finals of the one-day tournaments.

But the board have thrown their full support behind the

49-year-old former Yorkshire and England opening batsman.

Speaking at the club's annual meeting at Headingley on Saturday, Yorkshire chairman Colin Graves made clear: "I have great faith in Martyn Moxon, his strategies and his policies, and the board is 100 per cent behind him.

"At no time during the last year – even when we had difficult times – did we consider Martyn's position, I can assure you of that.

"When Martyn came back to Yorkshire he had a five-year plan to develop the team and he has always had the backing of the board. He will continue to receive that backing as we try to move forward."

Moxon – on a one-year rolling contract at Headingley – said he was determined to repay the board's conviction.

"I don't feel under any pressure from the board," he said. "I just desperately want us to make progress on the field and I'm determined to bring success to the club.

"We've got the nucleus now of a very good side – one I firmly believe is capable of generating success for years to come.

"At the same time, it's important to remember we're a work in progress and that we can't expect success to materialise overnight."

New captain Andrew Gale also outlined his views on the squad, who yesterday flew to Barbados for a two-week pre-season tour.

"We've got some extremely talented cricketers and I believe that if we can direct those cricketers in the right direction we can be part of something very special in the next couple of years," he insisted.

"I feel we're going forward at a rapid rate and we've got a young squad who are chomping at the bit to show their skills.

"I can promise that my team will fight for the White Rose and they'll play fearless, attacking and aggressive cricket."

The annual meeting confirmed the election of former Yorkshire and England captain Raymond Illingworth as club president in succession to Brian Close.

Members also heard Yorkshire have agreed in principle to award another 10-year staging agreement to Scarborough Cricket Club – subject to ground improvements.
