Johnson the hero as Clifton are pipped

YORK SENIOR

Dunnington grabbed the title from long-time leaders Clifton Alliance on the final day of the season when they gained much the better of a draw with Fenner whilst the former leaders were being beaten by Studley Royal.

Dunnington's hero was Dave Johnson, whose 101 was his fourth century of the season. With Harwood Williams adding 45 in a late burst, Dunnington reached 213-5 in a game reduced to 29 overs. Johnson then followed with 3-17 as he and Dave Kitching 4-35 caused problems for all but Will Rhodes, who made a resolute 77 not out which took his side to 118-9.

Clifton Alliance took a 14- point lead into the final game and batted first but were pegged back by Tom Hixon's 4-35. Matt Pickles then played a brilliant innings which saw him hit an unbeaten 80 as he and Matt Coad swept the Royals to a four-wicket victory in 42.1 overs. By gaining a sixth wicket in the 42nd over, Clifton gained a bonus point which clinched the runners-up spot.

Easingwold ensured fourth place when they scraped to a two-wicket win over relegated Acomb in 52.3 overs after Acomb were dismissed for 159 with three overs to spare.

Acomb captain Andy Tute failed by 30 runs to log his first 1,000 run aggregate when he was dismissed for 29. Andy Green added 32 but the Easingwold bowlers were in command with Paul Redshaw taking 5-52 and Jonathon Marwood 3-31.

The home side then found runs hard to acquire but were indebted to Martin Piercy's 46 and Richard Bowling's 37 as they won with just three of the extra 18 deliveries to spare.

Thirsk were dismissed for the Premier Division's lowest total of the season, 47 against visiting Stamford Bridge.

Stamford had been all out for 121 with Dave Chaplin making 49 and Andy Milner 25 not out as Stuart Christon took 3-33 and Ryan Mckendry 3-34 before Mark Fairweather grabbed 6-17 in a stunning 18-over spell and Martin Veysey claimed 4-27.

York took the Division One title but there were mixed emotions for captain David Simpson.

Requiring 19 points to clinch the title, York put themselves firmly in command by dismissing bottom placed Ripon for 95. Howard Wooding made 29 of these whilst Simpson's son Andrew claimed 3-1.

Requiring just 12 runs to record his first 1,000 runs in a season, Simpson then experienced a nightmare when he was run out at the non-striker's end without facing a delivery. His disappointment was alleviated when Simon Lambert (25no) and Jason Wackett (56no) knocked off the runs.
