Kirkburton climb to Premiership summit

MATTHEW Wood, the former Yorkshire and Glamorgan batsman, collected his fourth half-century of the season to hoist undefeated Kirkburton into the outright lead in the Premiership.

Visitors Shelley suffered their fifth successive defeat after being dismissed for 139 in 36.3 overs. Wood then made an unbeaten 75, including 13 boundaries, but Kirkburton lost seven wickets before reaching their target.

Golcar, who were joint leaders before Saturday, suffered their first defeat at Elland, who climbed into second place with a seven-wicket victory. Steve Whitwam had 10 fours and a six in his innings of 111 as Golcar posted 209-5. Niall Lockley, Lorenzo Ingram and Paul Winrow all made half-centuries in the successful reply, Elland reaching their objective with 10 balls to spare.

Promoted Clayton West celebrated their first win, defeating visitors Marsden by two wickets with David Swan, Tom Barber and Murray Spence all recording scores in the forties. Champions Honley had their three-match winning run ended by visitors Shepley who triumphed by 45 runs. Liam Wiles included six fours and a six in his half-century for the winners and team-mate Danny Glover followed an unbeaten 43 by taking three wickets for 42 runs.

All-rounder Iqbal Khan was in fine form with bat and ball for Scholes, who won at Hall Bower by 36 runs. Khan took 6-29 in 8.3 overs and hit a half-century. Chris Schofield grabbed 5-24 for Hoylandswaine, who won by eight wickets at Slaithwaite. Former Batley batsman Kashif Talib struck a half-century in Slaithwaite’s modest 135-9. Then opener Joe Sayers launched an assault on the home bowlers, blasting 14 fours and two sixes in his innings of 89.

There was a close finish at Skelmanthorpe, who defeated Delph & Dobcross by five wickets with two balls remaining. Delph totalled 249-9, with Faisal Butt and Matt Norvall making half-centuries. Alex Scholefield was Skelmanthorpe’s best bowler with 5-72 in 14 overs. Scholefield followed his five wicket haul by hitting 49, Louis Aspeling (57), as Skelmanthorpe collected their third straight win.
