Maxwell tipped to revive Australia after key role in Yorkshire win

JASON GILLESPIE last night said he would not be surprised if Australia called up Yorkshire batsman Glenn Maxwell for the final Ashes Test at the Oval.

The Yorkshire first-team coach believes Maxwell must come into serious consideration after Australia’s series defeat and his contribution to Yorkshire’s sixth successive County Championship victory.

Yorkshire moved 50 points clear at the top of Division One with a game in hand after completing a 183-run win over Durham at Scarborough yesterday.

Maxwell helped change the game with a superb 140 in the second innings, and Gillespie believes he could do a great job for the Baggy Green.

“Glenn has to be strongly considered (for the Test team),” said Gillespie.

“I’m just hoping they’re not going to take him for the Oval because it wouldn’t shock me if we got a call.

“I hope not but, for Glenn’s sake, part of me hopes that we do get the call because your dream as a player is to play at the highest level. Glenn’s played Test cricket before and he certainly wouldn’t be out of place.”

Maxwell, 26, has played three Tests and is hungry for more.

Australia could make changes for the match at the Oval beginning on Thursday week, with Yorkshire’s Adil Rashid and Liam Plunkett having retained their places in the England squad. “I think Glenn can be an exceptional long-form cricketer; he just needs more opportunities,” said Gillespie.

“I’m of the same opinion with Aaron Finch (the Yorkshire batsman). They just haven’t had enough first-class cricket because of the scheduling.

“The way Glenn played against a quality Durham bowling attack was superb, and his technique is as good as anyone around. He got a run-a-ball hundred on a surface where both teams got rissoled for 150-160 in the first innings, and it was a special knock.”

Gillespie would like to see Rashid make his Test debut at the Oval. Rashid also played a key role in the win at Scarborough, scoring 127 and sharing in a sixth-wicket stand of 248 with Maxwell, before taking 3-66 in the Durham second innings.

“Rash may come into consideration because of the surface,” said Gillespie. “It might be a bit drier, and it might take some turn. Liam is also in excellent form. I was shuddering watching him bowl against Durham; he was fast, accurate and nasty. You won’t see anything quicker in county cricket.”
