Moxon confident if Yorkshire can find answer to losing run-machine

MARTYN MOXON last night reacted to the draw for next summer's Clydesdale Bank 40 League by insisting there is no reason Yorkshire cannot emulate their magnificent showing in this year's tournament.

Yorkshire have been drawn alongside Derbyshire, Middlesex, Worcestershire, Sussex, Kent and the Netherlands and will be satisfied with that outcome – apart from the travelling.

Yorkshire reached the semi-finals this year after winning 10 of their 12 group games before going down to eventual champions Warwickshire.

And although Moxon insists his team can take nothing for granted, he believes they will go into next year's campaign with plenty of confidence.

"I'm not going to say we've got a good draw because that sort of comment has a habit of coming back to haunt you," said Yorkshire's director of professional cricket.

"But it's certainly a group we've got a chance of qualifying from.

"There won't be any easy games, however. Sussex have been a top one-day team over the past few years, Middlesex have got a few new players and could be a different proposition, while Worcestershire could be a surprise package. Even Holland are potentially dangerous opposition."

The format of next year's tournament is the same, with three groups of seven teams. Each side plays six group matches home and away before the semi-finals and final.

The top side in each group plus the best second-placed team qualifies for the knockout stages.

Yorkshire's biggest challenge will be to replace the hole left by South African run-machine Jacques Rudolph, who was the tournament's leading scorer this year with 861 at 95.66.

"Replacing those runs will be our biggest challenge," conceded Moxon. "All our batsmen will need to try to raise their game."

The top team from each group, plus the best-performing second-placed team, qualify for the semi-finals.

Fixture dates will be announced in due course, with the full county fixture list set to be revealed in mid-December.
