New Yorkshire CCC arrival David Willey prepared to fight to get himself noticed

The the 25-year-old all-rounder has signed a contract to play for Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash over the winter, having already established himself in England’s one-day set up in recent times.

But he acknowledges it will be ‘difficult’ for him to earn a place in the ranks of the County Champions after making the switch from Northamptonshire – particularly in the four-day format.

“I won’t be guaranteed a place in the side so I’m going to have to work hard to become a permanent fixture” said Willey.

“It’s going to be difficult for me to nudge the current players – some of the best in the country – out of the side.”

“Hopefully, I can pick the brains of the likes of Ryan Sidebottom and develop my four-day game.”

Although the surfeit of quality at Headingley may have a knock-on effect on his playing time, Willey has made known his desire to break into the England Test side and believes that Yorkshire provides him with a better platform to do so.

He said: “If you look at the strength in depth here, there’s no reason why they can’t win the Championship again.

“The success that they have had will hopefully bring the best out of me. Playing day in day out with some great players and coaches will be a great opportunity for me to learn.”

The Vikings struggled in the T20 Blast last season, finishing second-bottom of the North Group.

The Northamptonshire recruit is confident that his qualities, nurtured from a young age at Wantage Road, can improve the county’s fortunes in the shortest form of the game.

“The one-day stuff is more my area and it will be easier for me to get into the team” Willey reasoned.

“I’m hoping to bring my skills and knowledge to strengthen the side.”

He added: “Northants allowed me to learn to play in different scenarios and situations from an early stage in my career and I suppose this exposure and the opportunities they gave me helped me to develop and learn things as I went on.”
