Nottinghamshire Outlaws v Yorkshire Carnegie: Nottinghamshire ease to victory as Gale's side struggle to excite

YORKSHIRE went into Saturday's match against Nottinghamshire knowing they could no longer reach the Twenty20 Cup quarter-finals.

Northamptonshire's victory over Derbyshire the previous night had made it impossible for Yorkshire to qualify.

Whether that led to a drop in intensity from Andrew Gale's men is open to question.

But there seemed little evidence of that commodity as Yorkshire limped to 112-7 after winning the toss, Nottinghamshire cruising home by seven wickets with 4.2 overs to spare.

Although run-scoring was never easy on a pitch that had been used three times in 10 days, including for England's NatWest series one-day international against Bangladesh, the first half of Yorkshire's innings was painful to watch.

After 10 overs they were 45-4, which left the rest of the batsmen with a mountain to climb.

As with too many of Yorkshire's Twenty20 displays this season, the shot selection was awry.

None of the first four dismissals were the result of good bowling; rather, batsmen gave their wickets away against a side who had already booked their place in the knockout stage.

Nor could the manner of defeat be excused by three changes to the team that lost to Warwickshire at Edgbaston last Wednesday.

Yorkshire rested Jacques Rudolph, Gerard Brophy and Steve Patterson with one eye on tomorrow's County Championship game against Essex at Chelmsford, opting to recall Gary Ballance and handing Twenty20 debuts to Lee Hodgson and Ben Sanderson.

Hodgson top-scored with an undefeated 39 from 34 balls, while Sanderson performed creditably with 1-13 from 2.4 overs, thereby giving Yorkshire two positives to take from the match. Instead, it was Yorkshire's experienced players who failed to deliver before a crowd of 7,012.

The tone was set in the game's first over.

Adam Lyth, who is enjoying a summer to remember, had a night to forget when he square-drove his first delivery from Ryan Sidebottom to Steven Mullaney at point.

Yorkshire slipped to 7-2 when Gale skied Luke Fletcher high in the air and was comfortably caught by Graeme White at point.

Yorkshire managed only 25 runs during the six overs of power play and lost their third wicket on the same total when Ballance charged the left-arm spin of White and was stumped.

Yorkshire fell to 34-4 in the ninth over when Herschelle Gibbs drove White lazily to David Hussey at extra cover, the visitors managing only one boundary from the bat during the first 10 overs.

It needed useful cameos from Hodgson and Jonathan Bairstow to hoist Yorkshire up to any sort of score. Bairstow played one of the shots of the night en route to a run-a-ball 25, pulling White for six over mid-wicket and clearing the Larwood and Voce Stand.

Hodgson also hit White for six, smacking him over cover, but Yorkshire's innings was sadly disjointed.

In reply, Nottinghamshire made a similarly ineffective start as they slid to 9-2 in the third over.

Ali Brown drove Sanderson to mid-off and Clint McKay uprooted Matthew Wood's off-stump as Yorkshire briefly threatened to spring a surprise.

But Samit Patel took the game away with 40 from 27 balls with six fours and a six over extra-cover off Adil Rashid, before Hussey (37 off 24 balls) and Alex Hales (27 off 32 balls) settled the issue with an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 55 in seven overs.
