Opener Callis shows
potential for Academy

ELLIOT CALLIS, the Doncaster-born right-hand batsman, launched an assault on Rotherham’s bowlers in a magnificent innings of 139 for leaders Yorkshire Academy, who won by 98 runs.

Opener Callis, 19, flayed 16 fours and a six and there was a useful 75 from John Shaw. Batting at No 7, Shaw helped himself to nine fours and three sixes and the Academy totalled 312-9. Rotherham replied with 214-8, denying the Academy an outright victory.

York climbed into second place after defeating Scarborough by 103 runs.

York topped 300 for the fourth time in the league this season, posting 313-6 in their 55 overs. No 5 Nick Kay led the way with 72, including eight boundaries, and No 7 Charlie Elliot struck an undefeated 63 containing six fours and a six.

No 3 Darren Harland responded with a splendid 96 for Scarborough, smashing 12 fours before being last man out, bowled by spinner Tom Pringle, who took 4-46.

Castleford lost a low-scoring affair against Sheffield Collegiate at Savile Park. Collegiate fell for 78 in 42 overs, paceman Jarran Cook taking 3-25 from 12 overs.

However, Josh Varley and Billy Root sprang to Collegiate’s rescue. Varley had a double-wicket maiden and took 4-2 off 2.3 overs, and Root took 3-7 in six overs as Castleford were dismissed for 51 in 25.3 overs. Collegiate have now won their last five completed matches.

Three games were cut short by rain. Barnsley made 96-1 in 28 overs at Cleethorpes, opener Jon Trower making 36 not out and Nathan Firn 43 not out. Appleby Frodingham were 42-2 in 15.4 overs at Harrogate and Doncaster posted 18 without loss in 5.3 overs at Driffield.
