Pain of missing out will haunt sorry Somerset

Deflated captain Marcus Trescothick believes his Somerset side will be haunted by their failure to win the title for "a long, long time".

Trescothick's side, chasing their maiden championship crown, shook hands on a draw with Durham at the summit of the table, only for three Nottinghamshire wickets against Lancashire to draw them level on points and hand them the trophy on games won.

It was the second time this season the west country side have seen a trophy evade them at the last moment after Hampshire pipped them to the Friends Provident T20 off the final ball of the match.

And, although Somerset have a third chance to end their season on a high in Saturday's CB40 final, Trescothick conceded the hurt would linger.

"The lads are pretty disappointed after a long, hard season and a lot of hard work put in to be second again," he said. "It's gutting, really. It's terrible and it's something that will live with us for a long, long time to know we were so close – touching distance to the trophy – but so far away when Notts got that third wicket. Any time you lose a big cup or a final it's disappointing. Twenty20 finals day still haunts me even though we're six weeks away from it, but with this being the elusive trophy for the club it is going to hurt, no doubt."

Durham batted belligerently to eat up two and a half sessions on the day and set a near-impossible target of 181 in 17 overs. A chase which never got going.
