PROMOTED Hopton Mills and Scholes made winning starts in the Premiership.

Hopton, playing in the top-flight for the first time, beat Methley by one wicket.

Ashley Mackereth (4-35) and Michael Carroll (3-24) limited Methley to 164 and Sufyan Patel hit six sixes in a sparkling 86 off 85 balls as Hopton knocked off the runs.

Methley’s defeat was tough on all-rounder Ed Walmsley (36 and 4-35), their new signing from Pudsey Congs.

Scholes, who are switching to the Bradford League next season, won by two wickets at Mirfield Parish Cavaliers.

Zain Abbas (96) and Joe Duffy (56) put on 113 as Scholes overhauled Parish’s 202 that included 59 by Tim Orrell and 44 from all-rounder Yasir Ali, who also claimed 6-32.

Greig Batty’s whirlwind 98 that featured nine sixes was in vain for Wrenthorpe in a one-wicket defeat against champions Townville.

Chasing 248-8, Townville won with just two balls to spare, thanks to Tim Walton (51), Connor Harvey (44), Matt Bremner (39) and Alex Page (26no).

Jordan Anderson (47no) and Matthew Varley (44) put on 79 for the sixth wicket in Wakefield Thornes’ four-wicket victory at Carlton, for whom Chris Leaf (42no) and Jonathan Rudge (29no) shared an unbroken 77-run seventh-wicket partnership.

Jamie Sadler (56) guided Ossett to a two-wicket win against Altofts and Nick Kaye (55no) and Craig Wood (44) steered Birstall to victory at Hunslet Nelson.

East Leeds’ Allan Olbison snapped up the day’s best return, 9-45, to rout Oulton for 77 in the Championship.

Rhys Olbison finished unbeaten on 39 as East Leeds coasted to a nine-wicket win in 13.3 overs.
