Payne's seven-wicket haul not enough to halt Essex

Clydesdale Bank 40 Review

Gloucestershire teenager David Payne took four wickets in as many balls but it was not enough to stop his side from suffering a 42-run defeat to Essex in their Clydesdale Bank 40 match at Chelmsford.

Payne finished with the impressive figures of 7-29 from six overs, mainly thanks to a frantic final over when five wickets fell as Essex were bowled out for 267 batting first.

That over was the culmination of a stunning Essex collapse that saw them lose their final seven wickets for just 22 runs after veteran Grant Flower (116) and Ryan ten Doeschate (84) had put on 166 for the fourth wicket.

From the first ball of the final over Payne had James Foster caught by Steve Snell before ending Flower's second century of the competition, caught by Chris Taylor.

The 19-year-old then wrapped up his hat-trick when Snell held on from Tim Phillips and added a fourth with the dismissal of Jaik Mickleburgh.

Chris Martin was then run out by wicketkeeper Jonathan Batty from the final ball.

In reply William Porterfield hit 65 but Gloucestershire never really threatened the target as they were bowled out for 225 from 37.3 overs.

Sussex ensured a third successive win to start the competition after beating Lancashire by 39 runs at Hove.

Andy Hodd hit 91 in the Sharks' 245-7 and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan's 3-37 restricted the visitors to 206-9.

Durham suffered their first 40-over defeat after England batsmen Jonathan Trott hit a century to lead Warwickshire to a seven-wicket win at Edgbaston.

Trott hit 103 from 98 balls and with Jim Troughton unbeaten on 66 the hosts reeled in Durham's 200-9 with five overs left.

The newly-formed Unicorns are still searching for their first win after an unbeaten stand of 149 between Zander de Bruyn (106) and James Hildreth (84) helped Somerset to a comfortable seven-wicket win.

De Bruyn was the anchor, taking 110 balls for his century, while Hildreth hit three sixes and eight fours in an explosive

54-ball stay.

Phil Jaques hit a century but Worcestershire suffered a

five-wicket loss against Glamorgan.

The Australian opener has struggled for form this season but, with hopes of joining the national team following Phil Hughes's injury earlier this week, impressed with 116 in his side's competitive 256-6.

It was another Australian, Mark Cosgrove, who led Glamorgan with 86 as they achieved the target with 10 balls to spare.
