Paynter delivers with both bat and ball to help Wrenthrope strengthen grip at top

ALL-rounder David Paynter was outstanding as Premier Division champions Wrenthorpe increased their lead to four points by beating Northowram Fields.

Paynter hit 87 off 70 balls and put on 81 for the fourth wicket with Greig Batty (35) as Wrenthorpe posted 250-6 in a 38-over contest. Oliver Whittaker (37no) and Eric Austin (37) were Wrenthorpe’s other main contributors.

Paynter (4-50) and captain Gary Fellows (2-15) limited Northowram’s reply to 140-7, which included a half-century by Robert Larner.

Second-placed Methley’s game at Altofts was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

New Farnley are eight points adrift of Wrenthorpe after they maintained their title challenge with a 56-run victory against strugglers Birstall in a 39-over match.

Openers Joe Suggitt (69) and Steve Blackburn (31) shared a 112-run stand in Farnley’s 222-3 and Birstall managed only 166-6 in reply, despite Indian opener Connor Williams’s 72.

Hunslet Nelson bounced back from two league defeats by beating Mirfield Parish Cavaliers by 26 runs in a 32-over game.

An unbroken 70-run partnership between Kabir Rashid (40no) and Jonathan Trevitt (38no) was in vain for Cavaliers as they closed on 153-4, chasing Hunslet’s 179-7.

Wakefield Thornes ended a three-match losing run with a five-wicket victory against winless bottom team Ossett.

Townville’s Ritchie Bresnan (5-34) and Jack Hughes (4-21) skittled lowly Wakefield St Michael’s for 56, replying to the Castleford side’s 238-4 that featured a century by Tim Walton.

Chasing Methley’s 173-7, that included an unbeaten 73 by Andy Ward, Buttershaw crashed from 81-1 to 104 all out by Michael Waite (4-12), his son Matthew (3-15) and Nathan Finn (3-7).

Moorlands, aiming to win promotion to the top-flight for the first time, are the new leaders after trouncing Oulton by 122 runs.

Michael Rounding (51) and Chris Stott (48) steered Moorlands to 176 and Andy Walker (5-12) and Nadim Hussain (5-37) routed Oulton for 54 in reply.

Batley stepped up their promotion bid with a one-wicket win at Carlton.

Replying to Carlton’s 218-9, Batley lost their first four wickets for just five runs before Mohammed Arshad (71) and Kashif Talib (52) rescued them with a sixth wicket century partnership.

Carlton’s defeat was tough on all-rounder Jonathan Rudge (45 and 6-50) who was their top scorer and best bowler.

Mark Heald (43 and 3-34), Andy Langley (42) and David Battye (3-35) led East Ardsley to a 74-run win at fellow strugglers East Leeds.
