Phil Jaques heading for Yorkshire

FORMER Australia Test batsman Phil Jaques has confirmed he will retire from Australian first class cricket at the end of the current season to join Yorkshire.

Jaques, who represented Australia in 11 Test matches and six one-day internationals, will join the Tykes after this season ends and will play as a local player on a British passport.

The 32-year-old has been one of the Blues’ best and most consistent performers in recent times, scoring 5659 runs at 41.30 in 77 Sheffield Shield matches and 2340 runs at 39.66 across 66 Ryobi Cup clashes.

He scored 14 first-class tons, including a high score of 240 not out, for NSW and blasted a memorable then-state record 171 not out in a one-day match against Queensland two years ago.

The opener was also at one stage establishing himself at Test level for Australia before a back injury brought an abrupt end to his five-day career in 2008 after he had amassed 902 runs at 47.47 and registered three centuries and six fifties.

His last Test innings saw him score 108 against the West Indies at Bridgetown.

Jaques said family played a big part in his decision to leave Australia.

“I have made this decision with my family in mind and I’m looking forward to the next chapter of my career,” he said.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time playing cricket for NSW and Australia and have always considered it a privilege.

“I have also made plenty of great friends along the way. I hope to remain involved with Cricket NSW in some capacity in the future.

“My 11 years playing for NSW have helped me to grow as a player and person and I appreciate all of their support I have received over the years.

“I walk away with no regrets knowing that I have given 100% every time I have walked onto the ground and I will continue to do this until the end of the season.”

Jaques will next be in action for New South Wales on Saturday when the Blues travel to Blundstone Arena to face Tasmania in the Ryobi Cup.
