YORKSHIRE pace bowler Liam Plunkett has been included in the England squad for the first Test against Sri Lanka at Lord’s.
The Middlesbrough-born 29-year-old joins Yorkshire team-mates Joe Root and Gary Ballance in the squad for the game on Thursday. There is no place, however, for Yorkshire seam bowler Tim Bresnan.
Plunkett’s ninth and last Test appearance was against the West Indies in 2007.
The uncapped trio of Sam Robson, Chris Jordan and Moeen Ali have also been included and national selector James Whitaker expressed England’s confidence that they are picking players with not just the requisite ability, but who are in form.
He said: “We would also like to acknowledge the contribution of both the county and England Performance Programme coaches in helping to develop the talents of Sam Robson, Liam Plunkett, Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes.
“All four have carried their exciting winter form into the domestic season to earn well deserved recognition.
“We believe that this group of emerging talent will be very well complemented by the established core of experienced players that have been selected.”
England squad: AN Cook (capt), MM Ali, JM Anderson, GS Ballance, IR Bell, SCJ Broad, CJ Jordan, LE Plunkett, MJ Prior (wkt), SD Robson, JE Root, CR Woakes.
