Pyrah hit by unlucky break and ruled out for weeks

YORKSHIRE will be without all-rounder Rich Pyrah for around six weeks after he broke his left hand during the County Championship match against Kent at Headingley Carnegie.

Pyrah sustained the injury while fielding on the mid-wicket boundary to leg-spinner Adil Rashid when the ball bounced up awkwardly and struck his ring finger.

“It was a pretty freakish accident,” reflected Pyrah, one of Yorkshire’s best players in 2011.

“The ball bobbled in front of me and I leant on my left hand and heard a snap; I knew straight away I’d done something bad.

“I knew I’d done something but didn’t want to accept it; I didn’t tell anyone for about half an hour because I hoped it would eventually settle down.

“But, in the end, I had to accept that it just didn’t feel right.”

It was wretched luck for Pyrah, 29, who has had his share of injuries in recent times.

Last summer, he suffered a twisted knee against the same opponents when he got his studs stuck in the turf during a match at Canterbury.

“It always seems to happen against Kent,” he added.

“It’s frustrating because I worked really hard during the winter and then this goes and happens in the first game of the season.

“The only good thing, I suppose, is that it was a clean break.

“Hopefully, in four weeks’ time, I’ll be able to have the pot off and start building up my strength from there, but we’re looking at around six weeks in total.”

Pyrah, a self-confessed poor watcher, is already itching to get back into action.

Like many he believes this could be a good season for the club after they were relegated last summer in the County Championship.

“We’ve got the right things in place,” he added. “We’re still a young side, but we’ve learned a lot from last year.

“If we can be more consistent, there’s no reason why we can’t go and get promoted in this league.

“Last year was a difficult year, and that was always a risk with a young squad and no overseas player.

“But the lads have grown up since then and we’ve worked as hard as we ever have during the winter.

“There is pressure on us this year and rightly so,” he said.

“We’ve got a good young squad and Yorkshire deserve to be in Division One.

“But, if you play for Yorkshire, you’ve got to expect pressure.”
