Rehman sparkles as Elland stun Scholes

LEADERS Scholes were the only club in the entire league to beat the rain and stage a home game – but they must have wished they had not!

Instead of gaining ground on the chasing pack, they fell to an eight-wicket defeat against Elland, who were grateful for a match-winning century from Fahid Rehman.

While all the other staging clubs called their games off, Scholes batted first in a 25 overs-a-side contest. There were half-centuries from No 6 Adam France and opener Tom Chadwick, while James Noble weighed in with 33 as Scholes posted 197-5.

France, unbeaten with 56, reached his 50 off just 21 balls, but Elland fashioned a successful reply.

Rehman, who had taken three wickets, struck 10 fours and five sixes in an inspired innings of 110, sharing an opening stand of 75 with Daniel Arms and 118 for the second wicket with Greg Finn. Arms made 42 and Finn’s contribution was an undefeated 32. In a tense finish, Elland won with four balls to spare, Arms falling in the 24th over.

While the teams whose matches were called off qualified for two points each, Scholes had to be satisfied with one, while Elland took five but remain in seventh place, 13 points behind the leaders.

Peter Drysdale, Scholes’ Kiwi batsman, made just 17 but he is almost halfway towards his target of 1,000 runs for the season. Drysdale, who represents the Bay of Plenty and played for Shelley in 2011 and 2012, turned out for Spondon in Derbyshire last year but was keen to return to the Huddersfield League. He revealed his 1,000 runs quest on joining Scholes and has now reached 489 runs from 12 innings in league and cup matches.
