Root's welcome return paying off following Sheffield century - ECB YORKSHIRE

JOE Root, back at Sheffield Collegiate this season after two years with Yorkshire Academy, crafted an undefeated century in vain at Doncaster Town in a rain-affected draw.

All other matches in the league were abandoned without a ball being bowled, but Doncaster deserved immense credit for ensuring a start.

After winning the toss, Town put Collegiate in to bat, rain interruptions restricting the innings to 38 overs.

With his brother Billy, Root had an opening partnership of 164 before Andrew Parkin-Coates had Billy caught by Amit Kundra for 91, including nine fours.

Parkin-Coates then ran out number three batsman Ed McKenna for 11 but Joe Root carried his bat for 105 in 103 balls and 147 minutes, hitting nine fours and a six.

When Doncaster batted, they reached 181-8 in 31 overs and the teams took three points each from a timed finish.

Alex Gosney was Town's best batsman with 46 and opener Graham Attenborough wasn't far behind with 35 but the home side were tied down by spinners Nadeem Khan, who took 4-53 in ten overs, and captain Matt Dixon, who had 3-43 in nine overs.

Weather permitting, there is a full programme planned for today with champions and leaders York looking to take a full eight points at Appleby Frodingham who have lost five of their six league matches so far.

In contrast, York have won all their games, apart from the second match of the season when their home fixture against the Academy barely got under way before rain cut it short.

York have a six-point lead over second-placed Academy who visit a Rotherham Town side with just one win so far – against Castleford as recently as May 22. The Academy's batsmen made a hesitant start to the season but they will be hoping to maintain the improvement shown in successive wins against Hull and Doncaster Town.

Castleford and Barnsley hold fourth and fifth places, respectively, and they go head-to-head at Shaw Lane with Castleford holding a two-point advantage.

Castleford's winning run from the season's start came to an end at Rotherham last week, while Barnsley have gone from strength to strength since losing their opening game at Doncaster and having their second game cut short by the weather at Rotherham.

Simon Widdup has had two centuries and an unbeaten 98 during a highly-productive May.

Bottom-of-the-table Hull still haven't managed a win and their visit to Scarborough gives the Seasiders a golden opportunity to return to winning ways after their recent slump.

After three successive defeats earlier in the season, Driffield Town are hoping for a third successive win at Cleethorpes. Off-spinner Nick Hardgrave is Driffield's man in form after grabbing five wickets in successive games.
