Saker is happy to see hotspot used for series

It was thought to be a done deal that the thermal-imaging method, which caused so much controversy in a vexed series at home to Australia last summer, would not be available for the rematch.

But with less than three weeks to go before the first Test in Brisbane, latest reports suggest not only Hotspot but a real-time ‘Snicko’ – a second means by which bat-on-ball contact is detected – may yet be on the agenda.

England’s response appears favourable, if bowling coach David Saker’s remarks are a reliable guide.

Echoing several similar statements made by coach Andy Flower last summer, Saker said: “I think if we can get as many correct decisions as possible, it’s better for the game – not just for England.

“The decision obviously will be made by Cricket Australia, but I’d definitely welcome it for sure.”

Saker, for one, has not lost faith in the accuracy of Hotspot – despite the confusion which often surrounded its implementation in the five-match series, won 3-0 by the hosts.

“Obviously over the English summer, a few things went a little wrong with it,” he added.

“But the majority of the time, they’ve got more decisions right than wrong – so I’m a big supporter of it.”

Wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor hit an unbeaten half-century as England’s women eased to a seven-wicket win over the West Indies in Port of Spain.

Kate Cross took four wickets as the hosts were bowled out for 126 and England reached their target in 33.3 overs, Taylor hitting 55 not out.

Bangladesh completed a 3-0 one-day series whitewash over New Zealand by winning the final game in Fatullah by four wickets.

The Black Caps had posted a more than competitive 307-5 in their 50 overs after being asked to bat first, with Ross Taylor hammering an impressive 107 not out.

But Shamsur Rahman’s 96 at the top of the order provided the Tigers with the perfect platform and an unbeaten 44 from Nasir Hossain guided them home.
