Scarborough sunk by Craven’s burst

Craven and Alex Lilley (4-27) tore through Scarborough’s attack to skittle the visitors for 43 before Alex Twigg (25no) did the bulk of the work as Harrogate cantered to 46-0 in just 8.4 overs.

York kept up the pressure with an impressive performance at Castleford, winning by 113 runs after Duncan Snell (56) and Nick Kay (98) found their rhythm at the crease.

Their efforts helped York close on 228-9, a target that proved far too steep for Castleford (115), despite the valiant efforts of Dominc Sharp (42).

Spinner Ben Watkin found his form to lay the foundations for a shock Hull win over Yorkshire Academy. Watkin claimed 5-50 off 12.1 overs to restrict Academy to 185, a total that was eclipsed mainly due to controlled innings from Tim Appleyard (63) and Dave Barrick (58).

There was another shock at Chichester Road, where Cleethorpes recovered from 3-3 after 11 balls to claim a 36-run triumph against Barnsley. Charlie Tomlinson hit top form with the bat, smashing 76 runs off 85 balls, but it was 17-year-old Harry Clewett who stole the show.

The youngster has been making his mark this term, and added to his growing reputation by making 81 with the bat as Cleethorpes reached 227-9, before capturing 7-47 as Barnsley were seen off for just 191 in response.

Simon Guy (88no) and Archie Ogden (37 and 3-25) were the top performers as Rotherham claimed an incomplete win against Sheffield Collegiate.

Guy’s efforts helped the hosts reach 189-8, a total that proved beyond Sheffield’s reach. Nick Gaywood (34) and Alex Patmore (31) were in form but Collegiate eventually finished on 158-9.

Tom Manning continued his fine form with an unbeaten 86 as Appleby Frodingham made 206. Sheffield United looked to be in with a chance when they reached 124-3 but they then collapsed to 153 all out with Paul Hilton (3-36) and Heath (3-21) the pick of Frodingham’s bowlers.

Sparkling Batty sets up another double

ALL-rounder Greig Batty was outstanding as Premier Division leaders and Jack Hampshire Trophy winners Wrenthorpe moved closer to completing a league and cup double for the second year running.

Batty hammered an unbeaten 52 off 29 balls and Luke Patel (79) and Eric Austin (66) shared a 131-run stand as Wrenthorpe recovered from 28-3 to post 274-6 at Carlton.

In reply, Batty (4-47) toppled Carlton for 140, despite Jonathan Rudge’s half-century.

Wrenthorpe are nine points clear of closest rivals Methley, who they host in a possible title decider on Saturday.

Methley, Hunslet Nelson and New Farnley will represent the league in the first round of the Yorkshire Council Championship play-offs on Sunday.

Wrenthorpe have withdrawn from the play-offs because they meet Townville in the replayed Heavy Woollen Cup final at Liversedge on September 2, the date of the Council semi-finals.

Chris Holliday (73no), Nick Connolly (59) and Marcus Walmsley (40) led the way as Methley overhauled Townville’s 228-6 that included 75 by Tim Walton.

Tom Suggitt (89) and Derrick Hammill (5-29) were Hunslet’s match-winners at Wakefield Thornes.

A last-wicket stand of 40 between Matthew Varley (34no) and Jared Warner (10) was in vain for Thornes who fell for 139, chasing Hunslet’s 200.

Montcin Hodge (74), Ryan Sharrocks (4-53) and Nick Johnson (3-28) gave New Farnley the edge against Altofts.

Birstall eased their relegation worries when Indian opener Connor Williams (118no) and Saif Ur-Rehman (4-20) steered them to a 57-run win over bottom side Batley whose defeat was hard on all-rounder Naweed Ghany (38 and 4-42).

Northowram Fields slumped to a seventh successive league defeat when they lost by 80 runs to Mirfield Parish Cavaliers, for whom Tharaka Gunarathne claimed 5-58 and struck 63. He shared a 159-run stand with Michael Padgett (70).

Wardlaw’s pace is too hot for Bierley

Yorkshire paceman Iain Wardlaw produced a stunning spell of 7-38 as Cleckheaton dismissed East Bierley for 80 on their way to a 10-wicket win.

Wardlaw quickly reduced East Bierley to 21-4 and they never recovered. Cleckheaton knocked off the runs in just 9.5 overs with Mally Nicholson hitting47 not out.

Cleckheaton have regained second place from East Bierley, but they are 45 points behind leaders Woodlands, who scraped home by two wickets at Manningham Mills.

Sarfraz Ahmed (5-34) and Pieter Swanepoel (4-42) dismissed Mills for 131, but Woodlands hit problems. They were reduced to 64-6 by Noman Ali (4-31) and Iqbal Khan (3-38), before Ahmed came to the rescue with an unbeaten 38.

The relegation battle is hotting up with Pudsey Congs, Farsley and Undercliffe all winning.

Undercliffe beat Saltaire by nine runs and the 20 points they earned enabled them to climb off the bottom at the expense of Farsley, who defeated Lightcliffe by four wickets. Callum Geldart (68) and former Saltaire all-rounder Yassir Abbas (56no) helped Undercliffe make 226-6, despite the efforts of Kamran Anwar (4-53).

Former Undercliffe overseas player Nawaz Sardar (61) and Fahid Rehman (55) tried to keep Saltaire in the hunt, but they were bowled out for 217.

Captain Ian Philliskirk made 91 as Farsley chased down Lightcliffe’s 193-8 with one over remaining. Opener Chris Taylor (73) and Alex Stead (54) top scored for Lightcliffe while off-spinner Mark Harrison (4-57) was the pick of the bowlers.

Captain Glenn Roberts (5-23) and Basil Akram (3-21) dismissed Pudsey St Lawrence for 107 as Pudsey Congs won their local derby by 109 runs.

In-form opener Nick Lindley (52), Babar Butt (39), Gareth Phillips (36) and Richie Lamb (35no) helped Congs to make 216-7. Congs are now eighth after climbing above Saltaire and Hanging Heaton, who are being sucked back into the relegation battle.

Saltaire are 20 points above the relegation places and Hanging Heaton, 21, following their 78-run defeat at Bradford & Bingley.
