Shahzad back as openers lead stroll against students

PACE bowler Ajmal Shahzad celebrated his return from hamstring problems with a five-wicket return in Yorkshire’s 10-wicket win at the Racecourse Ground yesterday.

The England player recorded 5-61 from 15.1 overs on the final day of the three-day game against Durham University.

The students, resuming at 110-3, reached 287 all out thanks to 127 off 209 balls from captain Tom Westley, who included 11 boundaries in his knock after resuming on 28.

Westley was last man out after a 276-minute innings and, having dismissing the hosts in 88.1 overs, Yorkshire were left with a target of 129 to win.

They reached tea at 20-0 and then Gary Ballance and Joe Sayers, who shared a century opening stand in Yorkshire’s first innings 355, accelerated to victory in the 25th over at 129-0.

Ballance included 11 boundaries in his unbeaten 73 and Sayers followed up his first innings 139 with an unbeaten 53.

Scott Borthwick steered Durham to an eight-wicket win against Warwickshire in Division One of the LV= County Championship at Chester-le-Street.

The spinner completed a four-wicket haul for the first time in the championship and made an unbeaten 48 when sent in to open in the absence of Michael Di Venuto, who has a thigh strain.

Graham Onions took four of Warwickshire’s six remaining wickets as they were dismissed for 137, leaving Durham to score 102 to win, and Gordon Muchall (30) helped Borthwick guide them to that total.

An unbeaten century from No 9 Naved Arif rescued a draw for Sussex against Lancashire at Hove.

Following on 300 behind, the hosts reached 459-9 before an early halt was called. Openers Ed Joyce (140) and Chris Nash (72) put on 169 and Arif shared an unbroken last-wicket stand with Monty Panesar (17 no).

Lancashire spinner Gary Keedy took 4-200 in 55 overs.

Alex Hales’s 84 steered Nottinghamshire towards a three-wicket win over Worcestershire at Trent Bridge.

Chasing 262, Notts lost both openers to Alan Richardson (4-88) with 30 on the board but Hales led the way and Chris Read made 35 not out, winning the match with a six off Moeen Ali.

Liam Dawson made 103 not out as Hampshire reached 212-3 to frustrate Somerset.

The hosts trailed by 228 after captain Marcus Trescothick’s 227 led Somerset to 513 in their first innings, Jos Buttler adding 61 yesterday.

But Dawson put on 181 with Jimmy Adams and pressed on to his century despite losing Johan Myburgh and Neil McKenzie.

In Division Two, Gloucestershire clinched a 45-run success over Kent at Canterbury and an unbeaten 136 from England hopeful Ravi Bopara helped Essex to a six-wicket win over Glamorgan as they chased down a target of 160.
