Somerset struggle to make early impact on Middlesex

Somerset, winless in four matches so far, had Middlesex 293-8 at stumps – with control of the Division One match firmly in the balance.

After winning the toss at Taunton it took Somerset 24 overs to take a wicket – the in-form Sam Robson for 42 – but things improved as Jamie Overton went on to take 4-65 and Jack Leach 3-36.

Australia’s Chris Rogers (56) and Joe Denly (55) each detained Somerset, with Neil Dexter heading into day two on 73 not out.

Surrey made a good start at Trent Bridge as they also attempted to record a first win at the fifth attempt.

They had Nottinghamshire 273-9 at the close, Stuart Meaker claiming 4-70.

Meaker’s haul included the key wickets of Ed Cowan and Michael Lumb, while Tim Linley took care of James Taylor (44) on his way to 3-54.

Steven Mullaney’s knock was the home side’s brightest spot, as he made 68 before being dismissed by Linley.

Nearly 35 overs were lost to rain at Derbyshire’s County Ground, where the hosts moved to 158-6 against Sussex.

Wayne Madsen’s 63 was the only significant contribution with the bat, but Steve Magoffin and Chris Jordan both managed two wickets.

Monty Panesar joined in by taking the wicket of Alasdair Evans with the last ball of the day.

In Division Two, 12 wickets fell at the SWALEC Stadium in the match between Glamorgan and Essex.

Glamorgan lost 10 of them as they were dismissed for 231, Stewart Walters (67) and Jim Allenby (77) making the majority of those runs.

David Masters was Essex’s main threat and ended with 5-44, before Michael Hogan hit back twice for the hosts to leave the away team 10-2.

Leicestershire managed four wickets despite only 34 overs being possible on a rain-affected day against Northamptonshire.

The home side made 91-4 in the time available, with Ollie Freckingham taking two wickets.

Rob Newton (22no), is already the top scorer of an innings that has failed to get going.

n Freddie Coleman has been rewarded for his recent half-century against Essex with a call-up to the Scotland squad for this week’s two one-day internationals against Pakistan.

The 21-year-old batsman, who signed for Warwickshire in March, impressed in Scotland’s Yorkshire Bank 40 defeat by Essex on Sunday with an innings of 64 from 68 balls.

Five recent recruits who joined the Scotland set-up earlier this year are all included – Leicestershire all-rounder Rob Taylor, Northamptonshire wicketkeeper David Murphy, all-rounder Neil Carter, Yorkshire bowler Iain Wardlaw and Sussex batsman Matt Machan.
