Swann's five-wicket haul gives England upper hand

Graeme Swann completed his five-wicket haul after Mushfiqur Rahim (79) dragged the Tigers to 296 all out but Alastair Cook opted to bat again and saw his side slip to 131-5.

That still represents a lead of 434 but for the first time in the match, Shakib Al Hasan's side dominated a session against their opponents.

The tourists started the day perfectly, with Tamim Iqbal adding just five to his overnight 81 before losing his off-stump to a beauty from Tim Bresnan.

That was enough to give him the highest Bangladeshi score against England, beating Aftab Ahmed's mark of 82.

Mushfiqur wafted lazily at his first delivery but was soon looking assured at the crease and began to find the gaps in the England field.

Night-watchman Shahadat Hossain was erroneously given out by umpire Rod Tucker before the decision was quickly overturned, though he did not take advantage. Instead he nicked to slip to give debutant Steven Finn a first Test wicket.

The 20-year-old, much improved from his tense opening spell on Saturday, deserved a second in what was a probing spell.

Naeem Islam joined Mushfiqur in the middle and set about playing a more reserved foil to his buccaneering partner.

By now Mushfiqur was using his feet well against Swann and driving confidently against the seamers.

By the time he raised his bat for a well-earned fifty, forty of his runs had come in boundaries.

The eighth-wicket pair re-established themselves after the lunch break and only looked troubled when Finn returned to the attack.

The Middlesex seamer found swing and a touch of movement off the pitch and twice found Naeem's edge. One fell just short of Swann at slip and another skidded for four to third man.

Both men appeared to have the measure of Swann, who had a half-chance of a caught and bowled from Naeem but instead endured a wicketless 14-over spell at a cost of 52.

Stuart Broad took the new ball as soon as it became available and would have removed Mushfiqur in his first over had Paul Collingwood held the catch at second slip.

Broad used the harder ball to test the batsmen's resilience to short-pitched bowling – a tactic that paid off handsomely at the start of the innings – but Naeem hit two fine fours when his length deviated.

As another edge fell short of slip and ran away for four, England's frustration was becoming apparent.

A needless run out broke the deadlock, Naeem (38) the victim of miscommunication in the middle and smart work from Michael Carberry in the field.

Swann then took two wickets in the next three balls as the fightback dissolved in the blink of an eye.

He owed the first, Mushfiqur, to a breathtaking catch by substitute fielder James Tredwell and completed his five-wicket haul by cleaning up Rubel Hossain.

England's opening pair played a steady hand for the first hour of the innings, running hard rather than hitting hard.

Cook was not in the fluent form of day one and was lucky not to be caught at short fine-leg after a mis-timed sweep. Nevertheless the England fifty came up without any serious concerns and the stand was worth 65 when Cook slog-swept Mahmudullah to Aftab Ahmed at deep mid-wicket.

Debutant Carberry, perhaps over-eager not to fail after his first-innings 30, was struggling for fluency and Jonathan Trott eked just 14 before falling to Shakib.

Kevin Pietersen arrived and duly pushed the lead beyond 400.

He showed some of his old swagger in hitting five fours and six on his way to 32 but once again fell to left-arm spin, Shakib winning an lbw decision against him.

Abdur Razzak sent Carberry on his way for a painstaking 34 to make it 130-4 and then tempted Collingwood (three) into a tame chip to mid-off.

Swann believes England are in a "magnificent position" to clinch the first Test, but warned that the hosts will be no pushovers over the final two days.

"We're over 430 ahead after three days and you can't argue with that, we're in a magnificent position," he said. "Yes, we lost a couple of wickets at the end, which isn't ideal, but with two days to play I think we're in the box seat. We got a bit of reverse swing going and there's always a little bit of turn."
