Title-winning captain Byas back in action for festival

FORMER Zimbabwe pace bowler Henry Olonga is among the star-studded names who will help launch the 125th Welcome to Yorkshire Scarborough Cricket Festival.

Olonga will play for a President’s XI against a David Byas XI in a Twenty20 match on Monday that will mark the start of the week-long event, which continues with a County Championship game between Yorkshire and Sussex from Wednesday-Saturday and a CB40 fixture between the same sides on the Sunday.

Olonga, 35, played 80 internationals for Zimbabwe between 1995-2003, capturing 126 wickets.

He will be joined in the President’s XI by fellow countryman Ryan Butterworth, England ywomen’s stars Danielle Wyatt and Arran Brindle, plus Yorkshire batsmen Adam Lyth and Gary Ballance.

The Byas XI includes a number of players who appeared in his County Championship-winning side of 2001, a triumph sealed at the North Marine Road ground on August 24 of that year when Byas himself took the clinching catch against Glamorgan.

Spectators will get the opportunity to see Byas – one of the club’s finest batsmen of the modern era – back in flannels, along with the likes of current Yorkshire first-team coach Craig White and former Yorkshire pace bowler Chris Silverwood.

Yorkshire batsman Anthony McGrath is also due to turn out for Byas’s men, along with a number of former White Rose players.

The second day of the LV County Championship match between leaders Durham and Yorkshire’s relegation rivals and bottom club Hampshire at Chester-le-Street was washed out.

Only 30 overs were possible on Wednesday, with the visitors reaching 77-3, and with more rain forecast it spells frustration for both sides.

Durham, seven points clear, have three matches left after this week and their three title rivals have games in hand. Second-placed Lancashire have to play struggling Worcestershire home and away.

Hampshire are 50 points adrift of safety and four of their five remaining games are against the title challengers, including Warwickshire home and away.

Sussex failed to build on solid foundations as Worcestershire held the advantage heading into the third day of their match.

Opener Joe Gatting made 71 and South African-born all-rounder Kirk Wernars added 53 in only his third first-class game but Sussex were bowled out for 265.

Worcestershire went in again shortly before the close and reached 16-0, a lead of 41 going into the third day.
