Tremlett on standby for World Cup

Chris Tremlett has been called into England’s World Cup squad as cover for their bowling department after their injury-hit one day international series against Australia.

Paceman Tremlett comes into the squad on standby after Yorkshire duo Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shazad returned home early from Australia with injuries.

Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann have also suffered from niggling problems while batsman Eoin Morgan has already been ruled out of the tournament on the sub-continent which starts on February 19.

Tremlett was one of England’s outstanding performers during the Ashes series, taking 17 wickets in three tests at an average of 23.35.

England coach Andy Flower said “We’ve got good news on most of our other players. The guys that came back early are progressing well.”

England national selector Geoff Miller added. “Whilst the injured bowlers in the 15-man World Cup squad are all progressing well, the selectors have decided it would be prudent to have an international player on hand who is acclimatised in case we need a replacement due to injury.”

Bresnan is struggling with a calf injury while Shahzad also left the ODI series early with a hamstring problem.
