Trower leads the way for Barnsley

RAIN at last eased its grip on most teams but left second-placed Rotherham frustrated in their attempt to end Harrogate’s unbeaten record.

Rotherham declared their weather-interrupted innings at 195-6 in the 38th over, James Moorehouse and Gurman Randhawa having shared an opening partnership of 125 before Nathan Smith and Jordan Lowe put on 55 for the fourth wicket. Captain Moorehouse led the way with 70, including six fours and two sixes.

Harrogate lost two wickets for four runs, paceman Archie Ogden removing both victims for two runs, before more rain ended play with four overs of the innings gone.

Barnsley drew level with Rotherham after an eight-wicket victory at Castleford, who were restricted to 158-9 in 55 overs. Despite half-centuries from Dominic Sharp and Andrew Bourke, Graeme Whiles’s 13 overs of medium pace brought him 4-38. Jonathan Trower and Simon Widdup then shared an opening partnership of 75 for Barnsley, Trower proceeding to make an undefeated 88, including five fours and a six.

Cleethorpes beat bottom club Hull by nine wicketss at Chichester Road. Veteran seamer Andy Ellis bowled 13 overs, seven of them maidens, and took 3-14, leg-spinner Alex Osmond bowling nine overs and grabbing 3-16 as Hull were dismissed for 71. In reply, No 3 Indy Hayre carried his bat for 36 in 42 balls, his innings including five fours and a six.

Scarborough captain Andy Simpson enjoyed an undefeated 82 and seamer Jack Holt took six wickets in an eight-wicket home victory over Driffield for whom Pakistan A batsman Aamir Sajjad was again in fine form with 82.

York enjoyed a 142-run victory over Sheffield United. Duncan Snell, Tom Pringle and Steve Crossley made half-centuries, Pringle and Crossley sharing an unbroken stand of 99 as York made 267-5. Paul Cummins struck an unbeaten 64 in reply but to no avail as Pringle (6-25 in 19 overs) and Dan Wood (3-36) did the damage.

Doncaster’s home game was abandoned with Yorkshire Academy on 82-5 in reply to 120.
