Video: Boycott and Ashes stars reunite for Sheffield charity match

The team was assembled by former England captain and Yorkshire star Michael Vaughan to play the match in aid of two causes, Sheffield Children’s Hospital and junior cricket development.

Football and television stars had also been persuaded to take part in the Twenty20 match, with former Premier League midfielder and Strictly Come Dancing contestant Robbie Savage in Vaughan’s line up.

As the match started, Savage admitted to having some nerves about facing some of England’s biggest bowlers and added: “I’m here because Michael asked me to come, but I am absolutely no good at cricket.

Asked if he could turn his hand to the sport as well as he did ballroom dancing he said: “I doubt it. If I manage to score anything above nought I will be very happy.”

Joining Savage in the Michael Vaughan XI were cricketers Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff, Paul Collingwood, Matthew Hoggard, Steve Harmison and Simon Jones, along with BBC presenter Dan Walker.

The England XI which took to the field at Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club was captained by Paul Nixon and included players Devon Malcolm and Philip DeFreitas, with commentator David “Bumble” Lloyd.

Yorkshire president Geoffrey Boycott said he was pleased to be able to support the event.

Boycott said: “Sheffield has a very important place at the heart of Yorkshire cricket and I have played on this very pitch many times for Yorkshire, so it has happy memories.”

Before the match, the Ashes stars took part in masterclasses for young cricketers who are members of the Michael Vaughan Cricket Academy in Sheffield.
