Waller smashes Calverley to victory

WADDILOVE CUP: Ben Waller crashed 67 not out off 37 balls in a lively partnership with Shabir Bashir (79no) that clinched Calverley’s four-wicket win over Kirkstall.

Steve Harrison (83), Ben Williams (52) and Paul Malone (49no) had taken Kirkstall to 264-6 but it wasn’t quite enough.

A spirited last wicket stand of 49 almost brought Third Division Colton a shock win over top flight opponents Collingham.

Chasing the visitors’ 220 in which John Swain hit a century, Colton were struggling at 151-9 when Mark Stalgis (26no) joined Martin Horner (45) but despite the pair’s spirited effort, they fell 20 short of the target.

Rawdon captain Andrew Doidge (69) and Jeremy Batty (53) starred as Rawdon notched their first win of the season, beating top of the table Thackley by two wickets.

John Inglis (78), Phil Critchley (58) and Rob Ellis (51) led the way as Beckwithshaw proved too strong for Bardsey, while Scott Dent (51no) and Brad Loveluck (60) headed Pool’s successful chase of Ben Rhydding’s 155-9.

An unbeaten 78 from James Ford clinched Follifoot’s victory over Adel while Davin Charleston (103no) steered Green Lane past Harden’s 225-8 in which Mark Beckett hit 86 and Jordan Mackenzie 52.

Jonathan Corcoran guided Knaresborough to a four-wicket win at Illingworth with an unbeaten 87.

SYKES CUP: Kristian Whittaker fell just three runs short of his century but the Skelmanthorpe batsman’s contribution helped the cup holders to a 74-run victory over visitors Elland.

It was sweet revenge as Elland had already chalked up two league victories over Skelmanthorpe this season. Delph & Dobcross, last year’s runners-up, won through by six wickets at Armitage Bridge despite a fine 82 by home opener Hayden Jones.

League newcomers Cawthorne overcame Central League side Almondbury Wesleyans by five wickets. The platform was built by fast bowler Paul Tasker and medium pacer Chris Walmsley, the Cawthorne skipper. Tasker took 4-11 in eight overs, Walmsley’s six overs earning him 4-25 as the Wesleyans were bowled out for 113 in 28.2 overs. Michael Burgess then led the successful runs chase with 36 and Walmsley was left unbeaten on 27.

Hoylandswaine defeated Frank Platt Conference side Lepton Highlanders by 117 runs. Alex Morris, Don Ranjith Bandula and Calvin Flowers all made half-centuries for Hoylandswaine, Flowers (4-23) and Bandula (3-35) also shining with the ball. Mark Mullins struck a half-century for the Highlanders and Mark Dixon took five wickets.

Rain caused the games between Scholes and Shepley and Barkisland against Clayton West to be postponed.

WEST INDIES: Pakistan continued to build a formidable lead against West Indies as they sought to level their two-match series in Basseterre.

Taufeeq Umar led the charge with an unbeaten 65 and he received support from Azhar Ali, who made 33 not out.

Wickets fell at regular intervals throughout days one and two so it was no surprise the Windies’ lower order resistance was quelled early on. The hosts started the morning on 184-8 with Kemar Roach and Ravi Rampaul going strong.

The pair added another 34 – and 60 in total, the highest partnership of the match – before Roach was beaten in the flight by Mohammad Hafeez for 29.

A few overs later, Devendra Bishoo (one) gave Taufeeq at slip his fourth catch of the innings.

Hafeez and Taufeeq started brightly for Pakistan’s second innings, with the latter reaching 39 not out from just 49 balls as they ended the first session with an overall lead of 104.

The Windies did have their chances, however, dropping Taufeeq twice by the time he was 13. They also took a wicket off a no-ball in the very first over of the innings.

The momentum remained with the tourists in the afternoon session although Hafeez did fall for 32 with the score on 82, bowled off an inside edge by home skipper Darren Sammy.

But Ali joined Taufeeq and they made untroubled, if unspectacular, progress to put Pakistan 180 ahead at tea.
