White Rose capable of topping 300 - Martyn Moxon

MARTYN MOXON believes that a total of 300 in T20 cricket is not beyond the range of Yorkshire's batsmen.

While accepting that it would take something truly exceptional to reach that figure, which has never been achieved in the 20-over format, Moxon said that if anyone can do it, Yorkshire can.

Yorkshire already have the joint second-highest total in T20 cricket – 260-4 against Northants at Headingley last year, which is only three short of the world record shared by Royal Challengers Bangalore and Australia.

After watching his side set a world record pace against Birmingham Bears at Headingley on Friday, when they were 134-2 at the halfway stage en route to 226-8, director of cricket Moxon said that Yorkshire have the potential to raise the bar.

“If everybody comes off, then 300 is possible,” said Moxon, whose side were 92-1 at the end of their six-over power-play against the Bears.

“If we can get 92 off the first six, then we could potentially get 300, but it’s obviously not easy for everyone to come off and you would need to have the perfect innings.

“A score of 300 would be the next milestone, I guess, and I certainly don’t think it’s beyond this group.

“It’s not that we’re setting out to raise the bar as such – there are no targets as far as setting records goes; the lads are just going out and reacting to the ball and, hopefully, everything comes off.”

Moxon’s optimism is based on a top-order brimming with power.

Adam Lyth and Tom Kohler-Cadmore are one of the best T20 opening partnerships around, while the likes of David Willey and Kane Williamson inject further impetus.

“We know how destructive Adam and Tom are, and with Dave coming in at three, we’ve got a lot of firepower,” said Moxon.

“And then with Kane at four, who did really well in the IPL opening the innings, it shows how good our top-three are.”

Yorkshire return to T20 action tonight against Derbyshire at Emerald Headingley (6.30pm).

The match was rearranged from July 11 to avoid a clash with England’s World Cup football semi-final against Croatia.
