Whitwam bam as Golcar defeat Bower

STEVE Whitwam, who topped the Premiership batting averages for Golcar last season, struck his first century of the season to maintain his side’s unbeaten record with a seven-wicket victory over visitors Hall Bower.

Whitwam stockpiled 13 fours and a six in an undefeated 110 after Hall Bower had totalled 197-8. Will Hinchliffe played his part in the win by taking 5-63.

Elland suffered their first defeat, going down by six wickets at Hoylandswaine for whom Joe Sayers led the way with 72. Elland opener Niall Lockley made a valiant 73 and Bandula Don claimed 4-44 in 15 overs for the winners.

Undefeated Kirkburton registered a three-wicket win at Delph & Dobcross. Tom Burkinshaw grabbed 5-79 for Kirkburton who then took 41 overs to overhaul Delph’s 184-7. Greg Buckley hit a half-century for the winners.

Champions Honley continued their recovery with a two-wicket win at Shelley. Simon Kelly followed up his undefeated century against Delph with a fine innings of 81, striking 10 fours and a six. Peter Drysdale included eight boundaries in his half-century for Shelley.

Shepley defeated Slaithwaite by six runs. Huw Ellis made an unbeaten 64 in the home side’s 189-6, but Bjorn Taylor responded with 85, including seven sixes. Sarjinder Pal Singh took 4-41 to play his role in the success.

There was an even closer finish at Marsden where Skelmanthorpe won by three wickets off the last ball. Tauseeq Raza hit a half-century for Marsden but they were restricted to 145-9. Imran Mirza then took 3-27 but James Crossland came in to face the final ball and despatched it for four to win.

Promoted Clayton West are still without a win after losing by 16 runs at Scholes for whom Tom Brook made an undefeated 47 and Andy Alsop took 4-35.

Darren Robinson and Matthew Steers had a partnership of 136 for Barkisland who recovered from 44-7 to 202-9 in a nine-run win at Emley Clarence in the Frank Platt, Mirza Mobeen taking 8-73 for Emley. Richard Greaves had an excellent 6-12 for Cumberworth who demolished Rastrick for 36 in the Cedar Court Conference.
