Woods and Pringle spin way to victory

DAN Woods, the York captain and the league’s top wicket-taker last season, spun his side to a seven-wicket victory over Cleethorpes in the champions’ first league match since June 4.

Woods, bowling unchanged, had a 6-47 haul from his 20 overs as Cleethorpes were sent back for 83 in 41 overs. Fellow spinner Tom Pringle played his part with 3-21 off 15 economical overs and debutant medium-pacer Glen Richmond took the remaining wicket in his first over. York reached their target in 14.2 overs.

Harrogate returned to action at Appleby Frodingham and won by 68 runs to extend their lead over second-placed Rotherham to 11 points. Former Yorkshire Academy all-rounder Alex Lilley starred with an innings of 103, containing 10 fours and four sixes and took 3-31 with the ball. Lilley shared a fifth-wicket partnership of 167 with captain Ryan Bradshaw, who hit eight fours and five sixes in his innings of 84.

Adam Lyth, back from county duty with Yorkshire, made a swashbuckling 94 for Scarborough at North Marine Road but the left-hander’s efforts against Rotherham were to no avail as rain won the day.

Lyth’s innings contained seven fours and a six and he shared a third-wicket stand of 149 with Indian batsman Samrat Sharma, whose 64 included nine boundaries. Scarborough made 210-7 in 55 overs before rain prevented Rotherham from starting their reply. Left-arm spinner Gurman Randhawa claimed four wickets but his 27 overs cost 109 runs. Paceman Ben Sanderson took 3-40 from 17 overs.

It was a familiar story for Castleford whose last four matches have either been abandoned or failed to start at all. This time Castleford reached 141-3 in 30.4 overs before rain ended play against visitors Doncaster. Opener Brayden Clark made an undefeated 70, which included 11 fours and a six.

Aamir Sajjad struck his fifth century of the season for Driffield before their game with Hull was abandoned and Will Rhodes made an unbeaten 70 for Yorkshire Academy, who reached 145-7 in 50.5 overs before the match ended prematurely.

WHILE all their Premiership rivals’ matches were abandoned amid torrential showers, Hoylandswaine scraped a one-wicket win to take over from Elland at the top by a point.

Visitors Shepley were bowled out for 75 in 27 overs by Michael Cranmer and Bandula Don, who took five wickets each. Then Hoylandswaine, undefeated since Hall Bower’s 29-run victory on May 12, passed Shepley’s total with their last pair at the wicket. Craig Glover grabbed 6-38 in 11 overs for Shepley and his brother Danny took 3-24 in 12.

Among the games that started but failed to reach a conclusion was Elland’s home test against champions Honley. The match was abandoned before Honley could reply.

At Scholes, Matthew Smith, Wasim Jaffer and Tom Boorman completed half-centuries as their side posted 248-6 against Delph & Dobcross. Bruce Cruise was left unbeaten on 73 as rain ended the game with Delph on 148-5 in 36 overs.

Another frustrating afternoon saw players in and out between showers before all but two had to give up without a result.

Pool were the biggest winners, their four-wicket victory at Bardsey taking them to the top of Division Two.

Umer Yaqoob(36) top scored in Bardsey’s 98 and then went on to take 4-47 but with James Ward hitting 47, Pool managed to pick up all six points.

The only other finish was played out in Division Three where Majid Inayat (52) helped Silsden to 164 before Matthew Shuttleworth (3-46) and Alex Bradbury (3-16) bowled out Woodhouse for 148 despite 48 from Asim Allam.

Nowhere will the frustration have been greater than at Division One leaders Silsden, who were up against their nearest rivals Collingham on the day the season reached its halfway point. John Swain hit an unbeaten 61 as Collingham raced to 112-3 in 20 overs before the game was called off.

At the other end of the table, Ben Rhydding hit a season-best 214-8 and had Kirkstall struggling at 110-8 when rain prevented them picking up the win that would have eased their position in the bottom two.

Mahir Ali followed up an unbeaten half-century with 42 not out in Thackley’s 136-6, in which Otley’s Ricky Halloran (4-54) picked up four wickets for the third time this season.

Burley had Bilton reeling at 29-4 but an unbeaten stand of 63 between David Wilkinson (33no) and Sajad Ali (39no) saw them to 144-6 when rain stopped play.
