World Twenty20 - Yorkshire CCC's Joe Root urges England to '˜stay cool' ahead of opener against West Indies

YORKSHIRE'S Joe Root has challenged England to keep their cool under pressure when their World Twenty20 campaign gets under way tomorrow.

England recorded their second warm-up victory in three days with a 14-run win over a Mumbai XI bolstered by guest appearances from Adil Rashid, Jos Buttler, David Willey and James Vince.

That mix-and-match selection ensured all 15 of Trevor Bayliss’s squad saw competitive action before the Super 10 game against the West Indies and also made for some entertaining head-to-heads.

Yorkshire’s Willey pressed his case by claiming a hat-trick against his team-mates – top-scorer Root (48), Moeen Ali and Chris Jordan dismissed by successive deliveries to close the first innings – while Rashid’s leg-spin accounted for openers Jason Roy (32) and Alex Hales (37).

Buttler and Vince then put on 47 at almost 10 an over to bring the local side within sight of chasing down their 178-run target, only for Jordan to clean up both men with precision yorkers.

Having nervelessly chased down 170 to see off New Zealand at the weekend, England have showcased the tools to succeed, but Root knows that means nothing until they do it on the big stage.

“I think our preparation has been good, we’ve worked extremely hard individually and as a team and when it’s come to games the guys have stepped up and performed under pressure,” he said.

“That’s exactly what we need if we are to be very successful at this tournament.

“Under pressure the bowlers performed very well at the death, but now it’s about doing it when it counts. The best thing is we’ve got these experiences to call on when the tournament starts and we’re actually under real pressure when it really matters.

“Fingers crossed, the guys can take all that confidence forward into the group games.”

Jordan is shaping up to be a key figure in the England campaign.

As well as being the side’s best fielder, important on a day when two catches went down and the ground fielding was not at its best, he is also the nominated ‘closer’.

He has been working hard on his yorkers for the past six months and, tellingly, was chosen as the super-over bowler when England staged a dress rehearsal against the Black Caps.

It is a role he performed clinically against Pakistan the last time England tied a T20 international and could conceivably be a crucial factor again in India.

His new ball spells have been less eye-catching, but after he effectively settled matters by bowling Buttler and allowing just two runs in the penultimate over of the match, Root said: “Chris has been fantastic.

“He’s proven on a few occasions now that he can perform under real pressure. It’s about doing it consistently.”

Root outed Buttler as the biggest sledger during the inter-squad contest, but admitted he was concerned about being on the losing side as long as his team-mate still had a say.

“There were a few verbals around as you’d expect, mostly from Jos, but it was just good fun,” he said.
