Yardy marks return in winning style

cricket: Michael Yardy made a successful return to competitive cricket as he led Sussex Sharks to a five-wicket victory over the Netherlands in the Clydesdale Bank 40 Group A at Hove.

Five weeks since he returned home early from England’s World Cup campaign to be treated for depression, the 30-year-old took 1-36 and then made 39 as the Sharks overhauled their target of 226 with 19 balls to spare thanks to an unbeaten 109 from Murray Goodwin.

Dutch opener Eric Szwarczynski scored 111 off 117 balls but received little backing.

In the group’s other game, Injury-hit Kent ended Middlesex’s 100 per cent record in all competitions by coasting to an eight-wicket victory at Lord’s.

The visitors sealed their win with nine overs to spare courtesy of Martin van Jaarsveld’s 85 off 73 balls, coming in reply to the home side’s 176-9.
