Yorkshire ECB: Bethel strikes to set Barnsley on the way

Barnsley eased past Sheffield United in one of only two matches to reach a conclusion to take an early pole position with maximum points from their first two games.

Callum Bethel (5-37) helped restrict United to 153 with opener Suleman Saleem eighth out on 69. Jonathan Trower (47) put Barnsley on their way and Zohaib Ahmad (35no) and Steven Nuttall (30no) clinched the seven-wicket win.

The other successful side were Doncaster at Rotherham thanks to a sparkling unbeaten century off 87 balls from No 7 Alex Gosney. He smashed five fours and nine sixes and put on 94 with his last two partners, who only contributed three runs, as Doncaster raced to 232-9.

Gosney then picked up a couple of wickets as Rotherham slumped from 131-4 to 167 all out.

Jonathan Tattersall and George Ross followed opening-day centuries with each hitting an unbeaten 96 in Harrogate’s 241-2 at Appleby Frodingham.

With Alex Grimes 87 not out, the home side were on 150-3 when the game was abandoned.

Danny Walton (51no) and Joe Root’s younger brother Will (66no) shared a century stand in Sheffield Collegiate’s 148-1 at Driffield Town before the rain.

Half-centuries from Elliott Callis and Danesh Hussain and an unbeaten 44 from Yaaser Imtiaz were the highlights of Yorkshire Academy’s 228-6 at Cleethorpes, who were 1-1 when the weather had the last word.

Castleford openers Charles Finan (64) and Luke Frankland (40) put on 74 and with David Wainwright making 55, the home side set Hull 260-7 to beat.

They tackled the challenge with gusto and Andy Simpson was going strong on 105 not out when the rain halted Hull’s chase at 148-4.
