Yorkshire leagues: Round up for weekend of August 1-2

Heavy Woollen Cup final

WOODLANDS lifted the Heavy Woollen Cup for the second time by beating Hoylandswaine by 34 runs in yesterday’s final at Ossett.

Chasing 182, Hoylandswaine looked set for victory in their first appearance in the competition when openers Gharib Nawaz and Alex Morris put on 81 in 19 overs.

But Scott Richardson (5-43) and Chris Brice (3-14) sent them reeling to 148 all out.

Put into bat, Woodlands began solidly when Sam Frankland (25) and Duncan Snell (5) shared an opening 31-run partnership off the first eight overs.

Snell’s dismissal sparked a collapse as Woodlands lost five wickets for 39 runs.

Javed Iqbal bagged 4-29 from his 10 overs and he also ran out Jordon Laban as the Bradford League Division One title-chasers slipped to 70-5.

Logan Weston led a fightback by hitting seven boundaries in an excellent 59 off 84 balls and sharing a seventh-wicket stand of 46 with Brice (15).

The total was boosted by a last-wicket partnership of 29 between Greg Finn (13) and Elliot Richardson (14).

Hoylandswaine’s Sarjinder Pal Singh claimed 3-35 and Kesrick Williams 2-31.

Nawaz, who struck two sixes and 11 fours in a rapid 60 off 57 balls, and Morris (18) gave defending Huddersfield League champions Hoylandswaine’s reply a great start.

The game swung in Woodlands’ favour after Brice dismissed both openers in quick succession.

Scott Richardson then tore through the middle order as Hoylandswaine slumped from 81-0 to 135-9.

Yasir Abbas finished unbeaten on 15 as they were eventually all out in the 46th over when Elliot Richardson bowled last man Iqbal.

Yorkshire ECB League

WITH the top of the Yorkshire League table encounter between Barnsley and Rotherham washed out, York and Harrogate clinched important wins to put themselves back in the title race.

After being bowled out for 86 by the Academy the previous week, Harrogate found their batting form against Hull, Jonathan Tattersall leading the way with 91 off 82 balls to take his season’s tally past 800.

He found good support from David Foster (60) and Nick Taylor (60) as Harrogate set a stiff 339-9 target. David Watkin (94) and Chris Lound (51) led the Hull chase but they were still 88 short when they were bowled out.

Ryan McKendry (4-46) and Tom Pringle (3-52) restricted Cleethorpes to 192 with Alex Osmond top scoring with 60. Alex Willerton picked up two quick York wickets but Simon Lambert (51) and McKendry (56) steadied things and Alex Collins (29no) and Chris Booth (33no) clinched the win.

Leaders Barnsley looked determined to stamp their authority on their nearest rivals. Jonathan Trower (87) and Zohaib Ahmed (51) put on 117 and Steven Nuttall’s unbeaten 46 helped them to 324. For Rotherham, the league’s leading bowler, Ben Sanderson, picked up a season-best 6-72.

The home side’s batting never had time to settle between rain breaks and they finally gave up the attempt at 72-1.

Barnsley stay five points ahead of Rotherham with a game in hand, while York are four points back, just two ahead of Harrogate.

Lewis Brown (5-51) and Alex Gosney (4-38) made sure there was no chance of the weather denying Doncaster, who skittled Collegiate for 109 before Graeme Attenborough clinched the win with an unbeaten 41.

Kieron Watson (70no) and Shail Singh (40) starred as Appleby Frodingham batted out their overs for the first time this season for 220-9. Ali Asad (65no) and Sam Drury (66no) got Driffield Town to 177-3 when the weather intervened.

Yorkshire Academy were thwarted when their match against Sheffield United was abandoned with them on 63-3.

Bradford League

SALTAIRE were celebrating in the rain as the Bradford League bottom club recorded the only victory in the top flight.

They overcame Pudsey Congs by four wickets as all the other Division One matches were abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Saltaire claimed 14 points but remain remain bottom, having cut the gap to second-bottom Farsley to 19 points with five games to play.

Third-bottom Lightcliffe are just two points clear of Farsley.

Joe Greaves made 35 as Congs totalled 128-6 with Adil Mustafa taking 3-39. Asif Ayub (48) and Amer Ayoub (32no) steered Saltaire home with five balls to spare in the 24-over contest as left-arm spinner Nick Lindley collected 3-25).

In Division Two, Baildon kept their promotion hopes alive with a thrilling five-wicket win.

They chased down hosts Yeadon’s score of 115-4 with one ball to spare in a game reduced to 22 overs per side.

Captain Simon Bailey hit an unbeaten 57 as Baildon earned 12 points as their rivals were frustrated by the rain.

Oliver Halliday took 3-55 for Yeadon after Damon Gormley had top scored with 36 not out. Waqas Maqsood (3-38) was the pick of the Baildon bowlers.

Bankfoot recorded an 84-run win over Windhill in the only other completed match in Division Two.

Nigel Hanson took 5-21 and Hissan Ahmad (4-23) as Windhill were bowled out for 48 in reply to Bankfoot’s 132-7 in a 25 overs contest.

Overseas player Cosmond Walters made 60 for Bankfoot as Zafar Jadoon took 3-25 for Windhill.

Just two overs were possible between leaders Morley and second-placed Scholes.

Drakes Huddersfield League

HUDDERSFIELD League Championship leaders Cawthorne stole a march on their rain-hit rivals when they beat Thongsbridge in the only completed match in the league’s three divisions.

Liam Wiles (108) and Chris Matthewman (58no) guided Cawthorne to 262-9 from 50 overs.

Thongsbridge’s Ben Howitt had figures of 6-83.

Under the league’s rain rule, Thongsbridge had a revised target of 159 from 24 overs and fell short on 151-9 after they needed 10 runs for victory off the final over. Tom Raven-Hill (42) and Tom Kemp (40) led Thongsbridge’s scoring.

Cawthorne’s Jake Rodgers, Muztuza Hussain, Chris Walmsley and Wiles each claimed two wickets.

Cawthorne’s win put them 10 points clear of closest rivals Armitage Bridge.

The rest of the league programme was decimated by rain.

Play started in only three Premiership games and they were quickly abandoned.

Slaithwaite reached 47-2 from 12 overs at Moorlands in the clash of the bottom two teams, Kirkburton were 6-0 off 1.1 overs against Skelmanthorpe and Shelley scored 5-0 from two overs against leaders Scholes before the weather intervened.

With seven matches remaining, Scholes have a commanding 13-point lead over defending champions Hoylandswaine, with Shepley a further eight points adrift in third place.

Scholes will aim to complete the first leg of a potential league and cup double when they play Barkisland in the Sykes Cup final at Elland next Sunday.

Both teams have lifted the trophy once, Barkisland in 2008 and Scholes in 1996.

Aire Wharfe League

WITH second-placed Beckwithshaw’s match rained off after one ball, which was despatched to the boundary by Burley’s Tom Day, Otley made full use of the bonus system to stretch their lead at the top of the Aire-Wharfe League Division One to 15 points.

Jamie Pickering smashed 12 fours and seven sixes in making a season-best 129 and with the help of Andy Rhodes, whose 37 came off 16 balls, Otley raced to 225-3 against third-placed Kirkstall.

Having gained maximum batting points, Otley declared in mid over and had Kirkstall struggling at 89-5 for two bowling points when the rain intervened.

At the other end of the table, the bottom four all won, Ilkley for the first time this season.

Pace bowler Dave Pennett (4-50) and Rob Spivey, with three in four balls, restricted Rawdon to 132-9 and Alex Bailey (60no) steered Ilkley home by six wickets.

Jim Pickles (56) and Damian Lawrence (42) led the way as Follifoot scored 159-4 in a match restricted to 20 overs each, and Bilton’s chase stuttered to 126-5 after Mustahsan Shah was run out at 30.

There was rapid scoring from Damon Reeve (70no) and Joe Inglis who cracked a half-century off 30 balls, including four fours and three sixes, as Guiseley set Steeton a target of 148-3. Despite the efforts of Andrew Foulds (50) and Stephen Pearson (30no), the visitors were still 15 short.

Alex Boyle and Taran Chana each picked up three cheap wickets as Collingham were dismissed for 104, a total only made that respectable by the last three wickets adding 64.

Rob Winter (39) and Harry Kellaway (36) made sure North Leeds picked up an important win in their bid to avoid relegation.

All Rounder Central Yorkshire League

TOWNVILLE stepped up their Central Yorkshire League Premiership title bid by completing a league double over leaders Methley.

Jack Hughes (3-22), Peter Hepworth (3-72) and Conor Harvey (2-34) limited defending champions Methley to 181-8 which featured a half-century by Marcus Walmsley.

Hughes (56no) and Harvey (42no) shared an unbroken 70-run fourth-wicket stand as Townville knocked off the runs in 24.5 overs to avenge a 176-run trouncing at Methley in the Jack Hampshire Trophy quarter-finals.

With six matches remaining, Townville are four points behind Methley, with third-placed Wakefield Thornes a further one point adrift.

Thornes boosted their chances of being crowned league champions for the first time by beating Altofts by five wickets.

Matthew Varley (4-41) and Mahmood Rasool (3-31) toppled Altofts for 164, despite Joshua Drummond’s 73 and Callum Nuttall’s 40.

Thornes’ reply started badly when they slipped to 5-2 but Sam Storr (65) and Joe Cook (51) rescued them with a 123-run partnership.

Half-centuries by Muhammad Tahir and Kashif Talib steered Batley to 195-8 at Carlton who were 86-5 from 24 overs when the match was abandoned.

Championship title-chasers Hopton Mills collected maximum points from a home game against winless bottom team Caribbean.

Michael Carroll (3-1) and Richard Myers (3-32) reduced Caribbean to 39-6 from 14.4 overs before rain halted play.

After several pitch inspections, the umpires decided the match could resume at 5.45pm.

However, Caribbean refused to play, claiming the pitch was unfit, so the umpires awarded a six-point win to Hopton.

York Senior League

ONLY Woodhouse Grange of the top five in the York Senior League Premier Division had much to cheer on a damp Yorkshire Day.

They won for the first time in three matches, whilst rain ended hopes of a positive result in matches involving all the other top sides.

Grange’s six-wicket win over Heworth saw them climb above Scarborough into fourth. Ian Lynch made 32 before an unbeaten 35 from Dan Walton saved the home sides blushes as they struggled to 129 all out, Josh Jackson (4-39) and Chris Suddaby (3-17) doing most of the damage. Tom Young (50) and Chris Bilton (40no) then saw the hosts home with few alarms despite Graham Knott’s 3-25.

Leaders Sheriff Hutton Bridge got the best of a draw at home to Scarborough, Robert Pinder (84) and Paul Scaling (47) helping the home side reach 241 despite seamer Jack Holt’s third five-wicket haul of the season (5-48). He was supported by Theo Smith (3-69). The visitors were never in a position to challenge, Stephen Croft picking up 4-42 as they reached 125-6.

Acomb remain second but visitors Clifton Alliance ended on 129-8 in reply to 182-7. Captain Andy Tute (45) top-scored for the hosts as Scott Hopkinson took 4-51. Joe Ashdown led the reply with 46 as three wickets each from Andrew Brewster (3-27) and David Sykes (3-38) almost secured victory.

Stamford Bridge were 152-7 chasing Zingari’s 177 but had lost Stuart Boyle (59) and Tom Hoggard (45) as John Morton took 3-20.

South Yorkshire League

TREETON and Aston Hall both played while Whitley Hall were rained off as the South Yorkshire League title fight took another twist.

Whitley Hall got to 198-7 with seven overs still to play against Darfield. Anthony Wilson was still there with 82 and Michael Topp had 4-40 when the skies opened.

Whitley took two points, while Aston Hall took five at Wickersley and Treeton, despite having key players missing, took all seven at Wath.

Treeton, minus Charlie Roebuck and Steve Foster, bowled Wath out for 180. Sam Drury made 67 but Mohammad Attari took 4-33 before Chris Cobb (61), Paul Fearn (42no) and Scott Cunningham (39) carefully guided the champions home to win by six wickets.

Aston Hall are on a roll and amassed 273-2 at Wickersley. Former Derbyshire player Adam Whiteley made 108 and Joe Barker 68. Wickersley set about the total but despite all their batsmen getting good starts they ended on 235-8, denying Aston a vital two bowling points.

Jason Meadows made 105 not out in Elsecar’s 220-7. Paul Cummins took 4-32 as Tickhill, despite Andrew Rennison’s 68, were bowled out for 178.

Conisbrough could only manage 151 all out against Hallam.

James Smedley took 3-5 but Hallam, desperate for points, could only sit and watch the rain with their score on 40-2.

Coal Aston, meanwhile, lifted themselves off the bottom with a powerful victory over Houghton Main.

Daniel Hemingway (5-59) and Liam Johnson (3-53) bowled Houghton out for 206 (Liam Rigby 50), before Johnson batted just as determinedly for 49, backed up by Nick Horsfield (44no) and Laurence Browes (39) to win by five wickets and move above Wath.
