Yorkshire leagues: Round-up for weekend of August 16-17

Jonathan Tattersall hit an unbeaten 75 to take his league tally past 1,000 runs as third-placed Harrogate overcame Doncaster and kept their title hopes alive.

A half-century from Luke Townsend helped Doncaster to 203 but there was no stopping teenager Tattersall and captain George Ross, who smashed 92 not out off 78 balls to clinch an eight-wicket win.

Tailender Luke Shutt hit a four to clinch a remarkable win for Sheffield Collegiate that all but ends Rotherham’s title hopes.

Rotherham had struggled against Billy Root (4-42) and Josh Varley (3-38) but an eighth-wicket stand of 65 between Christopher Purshouse and Vinnie Ogden helped them to 167-9.

They looked on course for victory when Mark Cummins, Vinnie and Archie Ogden each took three wickets as Collegiate collapsed to 109-9, leaving last pair of Shutt and Matthew Dixon needing 59 for victory. But they stubbornly pegged away for 18 overs until they claimed the win.

Rotherham are 21 points behind leaders Barnsley who despatched Castleford after Jonathan Trower (110) and Azeem Rafiq (57) led the way to 288-7. James Brown followed up his 29 with 4-19 and, with Ali Jahangir taking 4-38, Castleford were bowled out for 133.

York remain three points behind the leaders after Tom Pringle ( 5-13) and Ryan McKendry (3-26) dismissed Driffield for 108, which the home side passed with seven wickets in hand.

Matthew Taylor (50no) was top scorer in Sheffield United’s 192-7 before Lesroy Weekes (4-23) struck as Appleby Frodingham crashed to 42-8.

And, even though Shail Singh and Jack Forrester put on 55 for the ninth wicket, they could not rescue the visitors.

Bradford

Pudsey St LAWRENCE are three matches away from their first Division One title for 24 years after a six-wicket win over Lightcliffe.

The last game could be the toughest as they will be away to defending champions Cleckheaton on September 5.

That is not an easy proposition as third-placed Cleckheaton’s 74-run win over New Farnley was their seventh in their last eight games and they are just 15 points behind the leaders.

Tucked in between St Lawrence (273pts) and Cleckheaton are Woodlands (263), who were eight-wicket winners over Bradford & Bingley.

Mark Robertshaw made 88 and James Smith (65no) as St Lawrence overhauled 188-5, a score that owed much to an unbeaten 103 by former Saint Alex Stead.

Spinner Chris Brice (5-20) and Sarfraz Ahmed (3-20) helped Woodlands bowl out Bradford & Bingley for 109 despite an unbeaten 56 from Charlie Best.

Cleckheaton had to dig deep for their win. They were reeling after former Yorkshire spinner Ian Fisher took 5-26 but James Lee hit six sixes in a spirited 59 which took his side to 192.

Iain Wardlaw (4-24) ripped out the top order before spinners Andrew Deegan (3-31) and Tanzeel Altaf (3-32) completed the job of dismissing New Farnley for 118.

Hanging Heaton suffered a two-wicket defeat against Pudsey Congs, who chased down 209-7 as Nick Langley hit an unbeaten 103.

David Stiff also struck 51 not out and Callum Geldart (48) while veteran John Carruthers took 4-32 for Hanging Heaton.

Mark Gill made 111 not out to ease East Bierley’s relegation fears with a 37-run win over second-bottom Farsley.

Central Yorkshire

WAKEFIELD Thornes are the new Premiership leaders after Methley lost top spot with a nine-wicket home defeat against Wrenthorpe.

Greg Wood (130no) and Darryl Hendricks (75no) were outstanding as Wrenthorpe kept alive their title hopes by overhauling Methley’s 225-7 in just 28 overs.

James Wolfenden (123) shared an opening 125-run stand with Matt Jordan (48) and put on 96 with Faisal Irfan (58) as Thornes made 273-6 against strugglers Buttershaw SP, who collapsed from 50-3 to 54 all out against Mahmood Rasool (5-20), Matt Varley (3-9) and Irfan (2-19).

Thornes are one point ahead of Methley, with Townville a further two points adrift after they beat Batley. Chris Holliday hammered an unbeaten 156 off 118 balls to guide Townville to 246 and Jack Hughes (5-32) and Alex Page (4-47) toppled Batley for 158.

William Simpson (105) and Gurman Randhawa (57no) shared a 162-run opening stand in Ossett’s eight-wicket win at Birstall, who were limited to 181-9 by Charles Orme (4-22).

Tim Orrell’s unbeaten 72 steered Mirfield PC to a seven-wicket win at Hunslet Nelson, all out for 123 as Nazar Hussain (5-30), Daniel Hope (2-24) and James Hardcastle (2-26) struck.

Muhammad Khan and Josh Thurwell shared a last-wicket stand of 23 as Carlton scraped home against Altofts, for whom Jonathon Donnelly (5-29) and Brent Law (53) shone.

Hopton Mills retained a one-point lead over Liversedge in the Championship. Ashley Mackereth hit 99 and Chris Scott 55 as Hopton defeated Northowram Fields by 91 runs.

Matt King’s unbeaten century was in vain for Great Preston whose lead in Division One was cut to three points when they lost to closest rivals East Leeds.

Huddersfield

BROTHERS Tom and Josh Brook edged Scholes closer to the Premiership title by leading them to a 23-run win at Honley.

A sixth-wicket stand of 60 between Danny Howard (39) and Sam Denton (36) was in vain for Honley as Tom (4-25) and Josh (3-30) toppled them for 148, replying to Scholes’ 171-9.

Scholes stayed 13 points clear of Hoylandswaine, who beat Sykes Cup winners Barkisland by four wickets.

Opener Alex Morris struck three sixes and 23 fours in an unbeaten 141 off 169 balls as Hoylandswaine overhauled Barkisland’s 242-8 that featured a 136-run stand in 20 overs between Tim Seifert (70) and Alex Scholefield (69).

Steve Whitwam hammered 117 off 133 deliveries and William Hinchliffe claimed 4-41 in Golcar’s 91-run win at Shelley.

The bottom four – Slaithwaite, Moorlands, Skelmanthorpe and Elland – all lost.

Kirkburton beat Slaithwaite by four wickets after Craig Fletcher (4-45) and Javaid Ahmad (3-33) held them at 161-9, including a half-century by Dan Hill.

Andrew Gleave (76) and Chris Laker (67) steered Delph and Dobcross to an eight-wicket victory at Moorlands while Broad Oak moved further away from relegation trouble with a five-wicket win at Elland.

Dan Wood (68), Danny Glover (32) and Oliver Davidson (31) guided Shepley to 255-7 against Skelmanthorpe, who were routed for 62 by Nasir Jamal (5-23) and Glover (5-38).

Ben Simpson hit 129 and Jack Rodgers snapped up 4-21 as Championship leaders Cawthorne beat Almondbury Wesleyans by 205 runs.

Matt Gummerson (54) and Bilal Khiljee (43 and 4-28) gave Holmfirth the edge against Lascelles Hall.

South Yorkshire

ASTON HalL have opened a six-point gap on their title rivals as they head towards another important encounter against Treeton.

In Saturday’s important match, Aston Hall made 276-5 against Whitley Hall. Nick Smit (139) and Matthew Cartwright (90) put on 226 for the third wicket before Whitley replied on 169-7.

Whitley’s Anthony Wilson made 60 but the lower order played for the draw to restrict Aston to five out of a maximum seven points.

Steve Foster was back for Treeton and took 3-46, but it did not stop Shahjhan Younis scoring 130 not out as Wickersley cruised to 264-6.

Charlie Roebuck replied with his customary class, making 75 off 59 balls out of 94-2, but Treeton collapsed to 196 all out, Wickersley winning with an over to spare, Haider Jehangir taking 4-51.

At the bottom, Wath and Coal Aston are battling to escape the relegation zone.

Wath took a big step by scoring 239-7 against Hallam, who held on with 183-7. Joe Cooper made 60 and Rob Basu 55 not out, earning a point and restricting Wath to five.

Still, it was enough to take them past Coal Aston, who at one stage, with Conisbrough 93-7, could see a win for themselves. The tail wagged and Conisbrough ended up with 218 and bowled out a deflated Coal Aston for 125.

Above them, Houghton Main got a point from Tickhill by hanging on for 172-9 (Michael Brown 40, Alex Rowland 4-50) in reply to 201-9 (Lee Bradshaw 57, Andrew Rennison 50, Yousaf Raiman 5-38.

They moved up on Darfield, who managed 171-8 as Will Turner hit 51 but could not stop Elsecar scraping past by one wicket with one ball to go.

Paul Cummins scored 70 and took 3-44.

Aire Wharfe

Damian Lawrence took 6-35 as Follifoot beat Rawdon by one run to raise hopes they will escape relegation.

A 79-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player sent Follifoot to the bottom earlier in the season but they have clawed their way back and are only one point behind Ilkley, the side just in the safety zone.

Victory looked unlikely when Follifoot slumped from 120-6 to 130 all out but Lawrence kept Rawdon on the back foot. The final pair of Stuart Ward and Harry Nicholson edged towards the target, putting on 11 before Alex Fox trapped Ward lbw.

Ilkley went down to defeat at Kirkstall, who made 217-9 with Stephen Wilkinson scoring 98 and Henry Wilson taking 4-48. Stephen Brown (5-42) and Babar Butt (4-61) made sure Ilkley could not challenge but they got to 175 and a crucial third batting point.

James Davies (67) and Jamie Pickering (48) led the way as leaders Otley made 184 before Ricky Halloran (5-11) and Sam Blake (3-25) dismissed Guiseley for 104. That keeps Otley on top and sent Guiseley to the bottom.

Second-placed Beckwithshaw beat Collingham to stay hot on Otley’s heels as the pair head towards a final week showdown.

Ben Quick (84) and Miles Buller (53) shared a century stand in Beckwithshaw’s 213-8 and then Yasar Ali took 6-35 as Collingham slumped to 134.

Having beaten Burley in the Waddilove Cup final, Bilton completed a league double over them thanks to Ryan Bradshaw (77) and Sajad Ali, who followed up a half-century with 5-33.

James Emmott looked to have put Steeton on the way to victory when his 5-39 helped restrict North Leeds to 150. But Aftaab Karim (5-38) and Larry Audain (5-27) countered and the visitors were dismissed for 92.

Jack Hampshire Trophy

Holders Methley became the first team since Gomersal in 1993 to lift the Jack Hampshire Trophy for a third successive season.

They stayed in the hunt to complete a league and cup double for the second year running by beating Wrenthorpe by 10 wickets in yesterday’s one-sided final at Little Church Lane.

Opening bowler Sohail Raz bagged 5-24 from eight overs as Methley repeated their victories over Wrenthorpe in the 2010 and 2013 finals and avenged the previous day’s nine-wicket home league defeat that cost them top spot in the Premiership.

Four-time trophy winners Wrenthorpe never recovered from a dreadful start.

Captain Neil Bourke (21) was the only batsman who reached double figures as they were skittled for 55.

Former Methley player Chris Leaf (8) was their next highest scorer.

Greg Wood and Darryl Hendricks, who shared a match-winning unbroken 226-run stand in Saturday’s league win at Methley, were both dismissed with only 18 runs on the board.

Marcus Walmsley claimed 2-13 and he also ran out Hendricks and Jordan Sleighholme and took a catch as Wrenthorpe were bowled out in 18.1 overs, with the last six wickets falling for just 11 runs.

Methley knocked off the runs in six overs with an unbroken 59-run opening partnership between captain Richard Foster and Marcus Walmsley.

Foster smashed two sixes and six fours in an unbeaten 39 off 24 balls and Walmsley hit 17 off 12 deliveries.

Yorkshire League Cup

Simon Lambert starred as York beat Sheffield Collegiate at Clifton Park to book a place in the Yorkshire League Cup final.

Choosing to bat, Collegiate took on the York attack and Alex Patmore and Billy Root – brother of England star Joe – put on 123 for the second wicket before Root was caught by Ryan McKendry off Lambert for 62.

Lambert took the catch to dismiss Michael Simpson (27) and also bowled Patmore for 93 just before Collegiate’s 50-over innings finished at 249-5, with Dan Priestley unbeaten on 25.

But Lambert’s main contribution came with the bat. He put on 89 with fellow opener Adam Whatley (56) and even though Alex Varley and Matthew Dixon picked up a couple of wickets each,

Lambert was unmoveable, including ten fours and a six in his unbeaten 117, his second century in the competition this year.

The five-wicket win means York will now face the winner of the second semi-final between Yorkshire Academy and Barnsley to be played at Weetwood next Sunday.

York Senior

Acomb are the latest side to top the Premier Division as the enthralling title race took yet another twist.

Last year’s Division One runners-up took over at the top from Sheriff Hutton Bridge after they lost to defending champions Woodhouse Grange.

With 18 points covering the top four sides, the final destination of the championship crown looks to be a long way from being decided.

The new leaders secured their 12th win of the season courtesy of an unbeaten third-wicket stand of 93 between Joe Dale (57no) and captain Andy Tute (34no) after Matthew Dale (60) and Scott Nicholas (37) paved the way against Easingwold. The successful chase came in reply to Easingwold’s 193-8, which featured a partnership of 83 for the second wicket between Stephen (47) and Martin Piercy (35). Kyle Waite’s unbeaten 45 also bolstered the innings, while. Andrew Brewster (3-57) and Mark Bell (3-51) both picked up three wickets.

Woodhouse Grange won for a third consecutive time. Nick Hadfield took 4-51 as visitors Bridge were bowled out for 168, Adam Fisher top scoring with 56 and Russell Robinson contributing 40.

The hosts’ six-wicket win was then set up by Andrew (57) and Chris (33) Bilton, the brothers sharing a stand of 72.

Former leaders Scarborough overcame Stamford Bridge by 41 runs in a low scoring encounter at North Marine Road, whilst Fenner caused the upset of the day with a win over Dunnington by seven wickets.
