Young Clewett spins in against Driffield

HARROGATE are rapidly gaining a reputation for brinksmanship.

A week after taking part in a tied game at Driffield, the men from St George’s Road defeated visitors Scarborough by three runs. The match contained century partnerships by Harrogate openers Nick Lindley and Alexis Twigg, who put on 110, and Scarborough’s Andrew Simpson and Mark Tennant, whose third-wicket stand was worth 134.

Lindley and Simpson both passed the hundred mark and Tennant made an undefeated 92. Needing 25 to win off the final two overs, Scarborough plundered 17 from the penultimate over, but they managed just five off the final over with three wickets in hand, to finish just short of Harrogate’s 258.

Lindley struck 15 boundaries in his 110, Simpson hitting 10 fours and a six on the way to 103.

Cleethorpes were in spinners’ paradise at Chichester Road where 17-year-old off-spinner Harry Clewett claimed 7-32 runs in 8.5 overs against Driffield and Alex Osmond followed a half-century by taking 3-22 in 13 overs of leg-spin. Cleethorpes won by 126 runs, Charlie Tomlinson and fellow opener Bill Kirby joining Osmond in accumulating half-centuries.

Barnsley opening bowler James Stuart was in top form in an 86 runs home victory over Hull. Stuart bowled seven overs and took 3-11 in helping to restrict Hull to 182 in 45.2 overs despite a sixth-wicket partnership of 70 between opener Chris Grey and Chris Lound. Indian all-rounder Kumal Razdan made 64 and took three wickets for the winners.

Barnsley captain and opener Jason Booth retired hurt after being struck on the shoulder by a nasty delivery but he returned later in the innings to finish on one not out.
