Coad, 19, comes into the 12-man party after former England pace bowler Liam Plunkett withdrew with a thigh strain.

Coad, born in Harrogate, has represented Yorkshire since Under-15 level and gained an Academy contract in 2010.

He has played several second-team fixtures but this is the first time he has been named in the senior squad.

Plunkett is out for at least a fortnight having made an excellent impression since joining the club.

The 28-year-old has taken 14 Championship wickets at 25.71, including a five-wicket haul in the innings victory against champions Warwickshire.

“Liam has been complaining of a problem to his thigh over the last week or so,” said Yorkshire physiotherapist Scot McAllister.

“We decided to get it checked out with a scan, which revealed that he has picked up a small thigh strain. He will need to rest and recover for at least the next fortnight with a view to returning to action in mid-June.”

Coad is likely to assume 12th man duties in the south-west with Moin Ashraf taking Plunkett’s place.

Tim Bresnan, who joined the Warwickshire match halfway through after being released from Test duty at Lord’s, is staying on with England so will not take part in the Yorkshire game.

It means Rich Pyrah, the 30-year-old all-rounder, is set to keep his place in the side as Yorkshire chase their fourth victory in six Championship games.

Azeem Rafiq, the 22-year-old off-spinner, is making encouraging progress from a knee injury.

Rafiq, who played a key role last summer, has managed only one Championship appearance this season.

“Raf is making good progress in his rehabilitation,” said McAllister. “He is about to start light running and some bowling drills. If everything goes to plan, he will resume playing within three weeks.”

Jack Brooks is making steady progress from his broken left thumb. The former Northants pace bowler is set to see a specialist next week.
