YP Letters: Nice work if you can get it on Sky's cricket team

Cricket broadcaster Richie Benaud did not need an army of co-commentators.

PARISH priest Neil McNicholas might wonder about the excessive number of commentators for the recently BBC TV coverage of the FA Cup match between Chelsea and Manchester United.

This can be nothing compared to the number involved in Sky TV coverage of a home cricket series when mostly former players both in the studio, in the commentary box and on the square before the first ball is bowled but there to witness the toss of the coin on the first day. This is not to mention the end of play interviews with the players and, at the end of the match or series, the presentations seems like “jobs for the boys”.

With the kind of money, even for cricket that Sky is involved in, it all seems a case of “nice work if you can get it”.

Thank goodness that from time to time I can turn down the volume on their dulcet tones as a welcome relief from their deliberations. Richie Benaud never needed all these “hangers-on”.
