Crucible latest: Ding, Davis and O'Sullivan win at World Championship

Ding Junhui reached the second round of the Betfred.com World Championship after he dominated his match with Stuart Pettman in Sheffield.

The Chinese player, who lives in Sheffield during the season and is based at the World Snooker Academy at Sheffield's English Institute of Sport, cruised into an 8-1 lead after the first session.

He quickly rattled off the two more frames needed when their match resumed Wednesday morning.

Ding never looked in danger, collecting breaks of 53, 77, 88, 120 and 95 to take a stranglehold on the match.

Pettman's only success came in frame seven when he managed to avoid a morning whitewash.

Liang Wenbo, who trains with Ding at the EIS in Sheffield, started the second session of his opening match trailing 7-2 against Ronnie O'Sullivan.

A highest break of just 39 had seen the 23-year-old struggle, but in his first visit to the table he knocked in six reds and six blacks before faltering on 48.

Liang looked in control of the next frame too as he looked to cut the deficit to 7-4, but he gave O'Sullivan a chance and he cleared the table with a 34 break to pinch it and go 8-3.

That soon became 9-3 after a break of 60 for the three-time World Champion, before breaks of 61, 103 and 127 - the highest of the tournament so far - helped Liang reduce the deficit to 9-7.

Four successive frames had brought Liang back into contention as the statisticians reached for the history books to dig out the best ever Crucible fightbacks.

But a break of 73 from O'Sullivan finally ended Liang's resistance and booked himself a second-round meeting with Mark Williams.

Six-time champion Steve Davis edged out Mark King 10-9 after a marathon match. The 52-year-old now faces John Higgins tonight in the second round.
