Dettori's passport to gold at Ayr

Frankie Dettori overcame a mix-up at Stansted Airport to arrive at Ayr in time to partner Redford to victory in the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup and give Yorkshire trainer Dandy Nicholls a sixth victory in the race.

Dettori tried to check-in with his driving licence but a recent change in policy meant he had to drive back to his Newmarket base to pick up his passport, forcing him to miss his first ride of the afternoon.

There were no such hiccoughs in the big race, however, as Dettori calmly brought the 14-1 chance through to collar stablemate Victoire De Lyphar to win in style.

Dettori, who celebrated by completing a double on Vesuve in the Listed Doonside Cup, said: "This is one of the great handicaps, I waited 23 years to win it for the first time and now I have won it twice in two years after Jimmy Styles last year.

"I left my passport at home because when I last came up here six months ago a driving licence was all right to get through the airport, but now you need the passport."

Dettori had won the Doonside Cup last year on Prince Siegfried and trainer Saeed bin Suroor's assistant William Balding said of Vesuve: "He did it well, but neither he nor Kirklees (fourth) really liked that ground. There are no immediate plans for them."

On a sadder note, the stable's Finoon sustained a fatal leg injury in the Laundry Cottage Stud Firth of Clyde Stakes, which was won by Majestic Dubawi.

Music Show, one of the Mick Channon stable stars, was unplaced in the Group Three 12 months ago, but Majestic Dubawi proved good enough to take the honours in this year's renewal in the hands of Chris Catlin.

Channon was represented by his son, Michael, who said: "We came here not knowing how good she was and she has done it well – Chris and I thought she would run a good race."

Majestic Dubawi will be heading to Newmarket for her next start in either the Cheveley Park or the Rockfel Stakes.

Owned by Jaber Abdullah, who has been lucky with fillies trained by Channon, connections are nevertheless refusing to get ahead of themselves.

"We won't get carried away, but it looks like Jaber has another nice filly on his hands," said Mick Channon. "He's a lucky owner and we are lucky to have his backing."

Colonel Mak has found his form with a vengeance and although a 33-1 chance there was no fluke about his success under Phillip Makin in the Silver Cup. He was defying a 5lb penalty for a success at Leicester last month and Yorkshire trainer David Barron said: "To be fair, the horse looks tremendously well, he has not looked as well all year and maybe he wasn't quite right earlier on."

Makin, who completed a double on the Michael Dods-trained Tiger Reigns in the Ayrshire Handicap, said of Colonel Mak: "He had never shown this sign of ability so he is going the right way and improving."

Richard Fahey's purple patch at the meeting continued when Bridle Belle made it two wins from three starts under apprentice Lee Topliss in the opening Nigel Angus Memorial Nursery.

Fahey joked: "This is the first time this year I have jocked Paul (Hanagan who rode Cosmic Moon into seventh) off! Bridle Belle is only a little filly and I wanted to claim off her."

Hanagan was not blue for too long as the pair signed the meeting off with an all-the-way winner when Cosmic Sun (4-1) made every yard in the Ashleigh Construction Handicap.
