Doncaster Rovers v Bristol City: Rovers wary after Coppell's shock exit

Championship: STEVE Coppell's surprise departure from Bristol City could signal bad news for Doncaster Rovers.

The former Crystal Palace and Reading manager quit just two games into the job and Rovers assistant manager Richard O'Kelly is wary of a possible backlash.

"Sometimes a change of manager can give a side impetus," he said. "It's down to us to concentrate on what we do and take that away from them.

"It was quite a shock to learn of his departure but Steve will know what he wants out of life.

"If he thinks it is time to pack in, it is time to pack in. If he has reached a stage where he doesn't feel any emotion (for the game) that is very difficult. I hope I never reach that point," he added.

Assistant manager Keith Millen was immediately installed as Coppell's replacement on a three-year deal and will be looking to improve things after back-to-back defeats against Millwall and, in the Carling Cup, Southend United.

Rovers enjoyed an opening-day victory at Preston North End but were brought back down to earth by Accrington Stanley in the first round of the Carling Cup in midweek when they lost 2-1 at home after extra-time.

Midfielder Ryan Mason, 19, joined Rovers on loan yesterday from Tottenham Hotspur.

The England Under-19 international played for Yeovil on loan last season and made his debut for Spurs in the UEFA Cup.

Today's game has added significance for Rovers striker Steve Brooker, who is finally winning his battle with an ankle injury.

Brooker quit Bristol City to join Rovers for an undisclosed fee in January, 2009 but made his first start against Accrington. "It's been a long time," said Brooker. "But I've come a long way and feel better for my first start. I am still a bit rusty but that is only to be expected."

Brooker spent five years at Ashton Gate and knows Millen, who has been on the coaching staff since 2003.
