By half-time they were 34-0 up, Hodson scoring the first of his tries. Scrum-half Gareth Newman picked up a brace and there were also tries for No 8 Sean Maguire, wingers Alex Orr and Steph Ligg, centre Tom Coad, fly-half Greg Wood and hooker Jamie Heron.

With the score at 39-0, Beverley registered their only points, through fly-half Phil Duboulay.

The game’s outstanding try came on the restart when Orr took the kick-off in full flight and burst through the visiting defence before offloading for flanker James Stewart to score.

Hodson’s third try came with the penultimate score of the game to round off a thoroughly impressive display from the fifth-placed hosts.

MORLEY registered a much-needed victory, Simon Bradshaw kicking all their 15 points.

Having won only one of their previous six matches, the Maroons desperately needed the points but they were made to sweat in the final 10 minutes. An entertaining first half, in which both sides tried to play running rugby, ended level.

Chester took the lead with a penalty on 29 minutes, only for winger Bradshaw to level matters two minutes before the half-time whistle. Morley went ahead a minute into the second half but the visitors equalised on 54 minutes through centre Lloyd Hayes’s second successful kick.

Parity lasted only five minutes before two more penalties from Bradshaw took the score to 12-6. Hearts were in mouths on 73 minutes when Chester substitute Andy Baston scored but from a kickable position and with Hayes absent with a leg injury, the strike which would have grabbed the lead was missed.

Instead, Bradshaw’s successful penalty on the stroke of full-time made sure there were no late surprises.

Penrith 29 Bradford & Bingley 13

For the fourth time this season the game turned away from the Bees after they conceded an interception try.

With the scores at 16-13 to the home side, the Bees were around 15 metres from the line when Phil Greaves threw out a pass which was anticipated by a Penrith defender, allowing the home side to gallop away and score.

That was not the only costly error as the Bees also managed to drop the ball over the line on two occasions and also gave a penalty away from a position where it was easier to score than not.

Things began brightly enough as Richard Tafa steamed over for an early score which Gavin Stead converted.

Things began to go awry and Penrith stand-off Steve Wood landed two penalties before converting a try from second-row Robert Dawson.

Wood and Stead exchanged penalties and Giles Hetherington slotted a drop goal.

Penrith were first to score eight minutes into the second half through Wood’s interception and the win was sealed on 68 minutes by James Ellar.
