Drummacy is veteran star of Yorkshire 'Oscars' show

THE achievements of Yorkshire- bred horses in the show ring, in showjumping and in the world of eventing were celebrated when Yorkshire Sport Horse held its annual dinner.

The organisation's equine equivalent of the Oscars were presented to breeders whose horses have performed exceptionally well this year.

Highlights included the Great Yorkshire Show which was memorable in many ways but particularly for Kath Barley and her 21-year-old mare, Drummacy.

The mare won the Lightweight Hunter Broodmare class against much younger opposition and went on to claim the championship and the best Yorkshire-bred broodmare award.

Drummacy won the hunter foal championship at the Great Yorkshire in 1989 and her filly foal, Drummatic, won its class and the foal championship this year.

In the Hunter Youngstock

two-year-old classes, Sue Cowgill's Hawlmark Classic Twilight won the filly class and the gelding class was won by Karen Hill's Hillcocks Flying High, which went on to win the overall championship.

Flying High's dam, Hillcocks Millie, has now produced three Great Yorkshire in-hand hunter champions.

best Yorkshire bred and

in-hand Sports Horse championships.

Hazel Bramley's Folklaw was the best over 15.2h Hunter broodmare with her foal, Double Diamond, also winning its class.

Bramham's Event Horse breeding classes are always hotly contested and this year was no exception.

Katie Newton's Yorkshire-bred Bucks Fizz won the brood mare class and the overall championship.

Kath Barley also won here with her three-year-old filly.

Eastern Index, bred by Joyce Houseman and owned and produced by Delwin Evans and Paul Jarrett from Wales, had a brilliant season, claiming championships at the Newark and Nottinghamshire, Royal Welsh, Osbaldeston and Royal, Bath and West shows.

In the showjumping arena, Nicola Sheard's Just Call me Max has made the transition up to 1.40 classes and only just missed out on the Foxhunter final at the Horse of the Year Show.

Yorkshire-bred eventers have been doing well at every level of the sport, among them being Rosemary Search's well-known "Bee" family.
