Duncalf misses out on semi-final spot

squash: Yorkshire’s world-leading pair of James Willstrop and Nick Matthew ensured last-four representation for the county at the British Open, but there was heartache for Harrogate’s world No 2 Jenny Duncalf, who crashed out.

Duncalf went down 12-10 11-7 11-5 to Raneem El Weleily, the fifth seed, from Egypt, who will now meet compatriot Nour El Sherbini, who defeated Hong Kong’s Annie Au.

In the men’s draw, world No 1 Willstrop, from Leeds, was first into the last four where he will face long-time rival Ramy Ashour, but was pushed hard all the way by Ashour’s fellow Egyptian Mohamed El Shorbagy before prevailing 11-4 11-7 11-9.

Nick Matthew, bidding for a third title, struggled initially against Laurens Jan Anjema, but fought back to close out the game on the hour winning 4-11 11-6 11-5 11-5.
