Dyson given chance to bounce back alongside Montgomerie

SIMON DYSON has the perfect opportunity to press his claims for a Ryder Cup debut later this year when he partners European captain Colin Montgomerie in the Royal Trophy today.

Dyson, 32, twice a winner on Tour last year and fourth place in the early Ryder Cup standings, teams up with Montgomerie in the fourballs as Europe try to wrest the initiative from Asia in Bankok.

Both were beaten in yesterday's foursomes as Asia took control of the annual contest by opening up a 2.5-1.5 lead as Dyson and Henrik Stenson lost 3&1 to Thai duo Prayad Marksaeng and Thongchai Jaidee, while Montgomerie and Pablo Martin fell 3&2 to Japanese pairing Ryo Ishikawa and Koumei Oda.

Europe's only win came when Robert Karlsson and Alexander Noren beat Charlie Wi and Liang Wen-chong 4&2.

A half point from Soren Kjeldsen and Peter Hanson kept the deficit down heading into the second day but Dyson concedes too many mistakes were made throughout the day.

"It was pretty close to start with," said Dyson, from Malton. "We managed to scramble a half which was kind of the story of the day.

"There were a few mistakes out there and we will look to rectify them on Saturday."

Montgomerie, who will be a non-playing captain of Europe at the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in October, has decided to tinker with his team in an effort to give his side a lift.

The Scot will partner Dyson against the Indian pairing of Jeev Milkha Singh and Gaganjeet Bhullar, who were held to that crucial draw by Kjeldsen and Hanson that keeps Europe in the hunt. Montgomerie said: "I think if you ask my players how they played most of them would not have been happy with their performance, so in that sense we escaped a bit.

"We are certainly not complaining about the position we are in, because we know we can play a lot better and we will have to if we are to get back into the match.

"We need to fight back as a European team and we need to win the series tomorrow to come out equal for the singles matches. It will be very close again and we are looking forward to it."
