Dyson rally not enough at Augusta

SIMON DYSON'S Masters debut drew to an early conclusion on Friday but only after a rollercoaster of a second round.

Following an opening round 77 that left him requiring a low score today just to make the cut, Dyson flirted with qualification for the weekend with a gusty display before fading over the back nine.

He signed for a 73 that saw him finish on six over par.

Teeing off among the first group out yesterday, the four-times winner on the European Tour, began with a double bogey after three-putting the first green.

However, backed by a loyal vocal following of family and friends from his hometown of Malton, the 32-year-old responded with a stunning run of four bidies in the next five holes which put him at three over par and within sight of a shot of qualifying for the weekend.

Dyson birdied the par-five second annd then picked up further shots at the fourth, fifth and sixth, only to hand one back with a bogey at the seventh.

Another birdie at the par-four ninth saw him reach the turn in 34 blows.

But with the weekend beckoning on his Augusta bow, Dyson could not turn his ambition into scores.

He dropped four shots on the inward nine, a run of three straight bogeys from the 14th proving his undoing.

The Alfred Dunhill Links champion, who finished eighth on the Order of Merit last year, at least birdied the par-five 13th at Amen Corner by knocking in a 20-foot putt after a solid recovery chip from just above Ray's Creek.

Dyson managed only six pars in an eventful second round.
